Has anybody seen discounted iPad 3's to clear out stock before iPad 4 arrives on shelves. I don"t know which to get iPad 2 or 3.
Cost is a factor.

Unlikely you will find a retailer discounting Apple products ( least they incur the wrath of Cupertino)

Try Apple's website and look under refurbished - that's where they tend to liquidate any old stock they need to discount

Apples refurbished website could be the place to look as they are cheaper. There are some online retailers selling ipad 3s cheaper, but not by much. Look at pricespy

Yes,

I was in Dick Smith today and they are selling the black iPad 3 16GB for $634.00 instead of $725.

I just picked up a 32GB Wi Fi 3 for $675 on the Apple store in the "refurbished" section. Really the only difference between that and the 4 is the chip and the dock connector so I think it's a good deal. They had every model and colour, from what I could see, which suggests they've popped all their excess stock there to offload it.

Do they come in new packaging, as if you were buying a brand new one?

Yep, you wouldn't know the difference, and in this case most of them are new, I suspect. I got my son a refurbished iPod touch a few years back, and it took a lot of rough handling and kept working just fine.

That's only $85 less than what DSE is selling them for ($634), and the DSE ones are presumably new.
I guess you have to ask yourself whether it's worth an extra $85 to have a new iPad over a refurb.

From what I have read, apples refurbs come in a brown box. So if these ones that apple are selling are really refurbished, they too may come in a brown box,. If they were just old stock, I presume they will be in full retail packaging, bit of a gamble I think, especially if you are giving them as a gift. DSE's price is a good one if you want it now and you are guaranteed the retail box. Part of buying an apple device is unwrapping it from the packaging too which is as well designed as the products.

Just did some Googling and refubs seem to get sent out in a plain white box with just the apple logo. New product comes in the original packaging.

Looks like Dick Smith are selling the 32 WiFi 3 for $764, which is $89 more than I paid. I'm fairly confident I'm getting a new one, surplus stock. Will update Wed/Thur when it arrives.
