Jon, are they both on the same Apple ID? And same iCloud ID?

Metaphorically of course. Why should my ipad and iphone both alert me to an appointment when they are sitting next to each other on my desk?

Why do I have to tell my iphone to share internet with my ipad, why doesnt it just know when it needs to share it?

I am on an iPad forum, which obviously discusses all things Apple. There are some Android users, and PC users, so it can all get a bit niggly.

I have raised stuff there, my annoyances over iOS.

Now, reading these posts above, I see a lot asking for Android stuff, Samsung stuff. That's not gonna happen. Correct me if I am wrong, but the last two iOS updates were often adding Android features, even then they were lite, like Notifications.

I don't want or would use widgets, I like the clean look. I can see Apple adding a few Android features, but please don't state amazing and new like last time, Mr Cook. Maybe NFC, maybe some air gestures, I honestly have no idea. It might be 100 new and amazing features, some that have existed on the dark side for an age. Maybe incrementing last years new features to make them less lite. I really expect little actually. I hope there is no drab look introduced as rumoured.

I watched a 5 part Android vs iOS recently. Bit biased, yes, bit inaccurate, yes, and a few things were now in iOS as it was a year old. Most of it I wasn't that interested, but I can see that there are a few very cool things that make the use of apps, between apps, navigating the OS easier and more efficient than Apple. So, I do not see iOS as easier and more intuitive at all. Small things, back button functions, sharing to any app that supports the content, not a handful of chosen apps, toggles, full notifications. (Notification isn't much good unless you see it for the 2 seconds it flips up, there is no permanent alert as in updates, mail, etc) Closing apps, I must re watch and list it. These are all minor things, catchups, but they would add a lot more ease to iOS.

In conclusion I expect big hype, maybe a new look (but it clearly will still look like iOS. Hope the likely flat look is an option. Incremental. Nothing new. few catchups. Disappointing.

To those saying things like "NFC" or "better camera" etc - you do realise the thread was started about the next version of the OS, as opposed to what hardware you'd like to see in a new device don't you?

I agree with the "like it as it is" crowd. I'm perfectly satisfied with the level of features in the OS and if there are any deficiencies with it they would be insignificant relative to the poor quality of third party apps, with Facebook being the most noticeable problem child. Given that Apple have worked with Facebook to integrate sharing and what-not you'd think that they could help with fixing the broken app.

There is one feature that I would like added to iOS - the ability to block incoming SMS messages based on phone number. This would allow me to be rid of the annoying automated messages that 2degrees refuse to stop sending, and it seems like such a simple feature I'm amazed that it's not already implemented.

Sorry for part quoting your post. This is what bugs me with Apple. You can navigate in app and in OS easier on Android, yet Apple seems to drip feed long existing features with each release. Easy to use? yes, it is, but it can be a lot more efficient. Android does, jailbreak does. I would prefer a catchup for usability, than cool features such as Siri that aren't really that useful. I gather that the S4 air gestures aren't really that great or that useful, (from what I have read, I've not tried it) but at least they provided some innovation. Apple needs to catchup. It's a quality piece of hardware and software, why let others move forward alone?

Grumble, but the smooth operation, app quality, hardware integration (certainly not software) and iTunes (sync, backup, restore) no lag, keeps me here. (Don't get me started on screen size, that's another thread before long)

Isn't txt spam illegal now? That would be a simple solution to report it. Not sure if my s3 blocks txts, I think it will with phone calls.

In iOS, you have to go through multiple menus, and can't do it while you are already in an app. What I love about iOS is it's robustness. It is a bit like an old comfortable slipper. But I think the new flat changes could change things up. Apple don't want it to be another windows 8 though. But appl;e do need a killer new feature. There hasn't been anything since Siri, and that is more of a gimmick, than being very useful. Has apple purchased any companies lately with a great new idea? Siri was something they purchased.

Agree. Your one example is one of a small few that will aid iOS usability. It needs what are now, base, standard features of actually using the phone without having to overuse the home button to go back and forth. iOS was a killer feature, it has ceased to evolve.

Cannot see a killer feature. Siri was potentially, but not outside the US where is is more useful. It used Yelp, but what I have read with Yelp doesn't indicate it translating to a more useful NZ Siri. Apple Maps, even without the issues it had/has, would never have gone further than equaling Google Maps. SJ made his mark, but once the smart devices have matured, I feel that became a hindrance, I had hoped that TC may add a bit, albeit gradual to begin with. Time is now to feature up the OS. Cannot see widgets, etc, but make the OS more user efficient. I feel that they are living in the days of the past, in the manner that there seems to be a lack of need to compete. Many in my iPad forum say that Apple needs to not follow, but to lead. I cannot see they are doing either THB. They have the hardware, optimal OS, app quality, are they resting on their laurels?

These are the only items on your list that are OS related and not hardware upgrades. Ability to transfer files without iTunes is something I think apple will never do (for many reasons including them not having complete control over it), and we all know Apple's relationship with flash.

So that leaves widgets, which as others have said, will pretty much be apple playing catch up.

Also in regards to RAM, the main reason Android handles RAM differently is because it supports true multitasking, whereas iOS does not. There are of course other things to consider with ram usage as well, but this reason is the one that immediately jumps out.

Companies do go through good and bad patches, and sometime companies do cease being relevant, as the market changes, and they end up failing. Look at nokia, they were once the top mobile phone maker inthe world. I don't know anyone now who has one, apart form older people. It could be a cycle that apple have to go through. Apple don't want to wait too long before they change things up, as they are already behind. IOS 7 could be the game changer, but if it is more of the old, with just new flat graphics, it could be a problem for them. I still think apples build quality is the best out there, but other manufacturers have caught up.

Yes, I generally agree. I see Apple as different to other companies that have gone though bad times. Oddly, financially, things are very sweet. Some of my Apple fanboy contacts on the iPad forum I am on, dont want change, and given Apple profits, there is no real need to change. Given the reputation that they have, it seems weird that they knowingly stay behind. They have a huge loyal fanbase, that is nice insulation. But surely you would think they want the hype, and to be seen in the supposedly cool manner they have been, and known for quality.

They can afford to do what they want, as it will work, and it will make them the big money. But as an Apple fan of sorts, if I was in charge I would like the pride of success, not just the bank assets. I expect only incremental iOS 7, maybe I will be surprised. I felt that after time had passed from SJ's death, that TC would then move Apple forward. But do that with iOS, not just with extra gadgets.

Well apart from widgets, I'm not bothered with those. But why not have a few extra homescreens for widgets, located via gestures? Have widgets 1 icon sized, and 2x1 and 2x2 so they can be live. One setting for your default homescreen. Given that this has never happened, if it did, it would be blatant catching up to Android. But so what? Appreciate Android for a cool function and make your own. Apple made Siri, Google improved/created Google Voice, thats what consumers want. Competition.

I want a functional lock screen a la Android. Why aren't my daily appointments displayed on the lock screen? That is so unbelievably functional. Even the pull-down info screen is lacking as appointments only appear 24 hours put and there's no way to adjust this.

I would like to have a lot of new things on iOS but the main itens would be:

Better multi-tasking management: I don't want to double click the home button to acces the in-memory apps. This could be solved adding gestures to avoid the extreme use of the (weak) home button.
Password to turn off the phone: Avoid people keep your phone in case you lost it and act quickly.
Better integration between apps: To exchange information between apps should be more smooth for developers allowing the users to have a better set of options on how to exchange data between apps.

I like iOS and still think it is way better than Android **today***, but I strongly disagree with people saying it is ok the way it is. There is always room for improvements and to deny that is to accept the fact that the innovation is not needed, and in this market, if you do not innovate, you die.

Android is now way better than it was 2 years ago, for example. For me, it is not good enough, but someday it could be, if iOS does not get better as well.
