Handsomedan: Personally, I have always been a bit of a late bloomer.

I usually upgrade about 6-8 months before the latest model comes out and never really feel like i have missed out at all.

That might change with the next one, but having just leapt into a new iPhone 5 a week ago, I can honestly say it's like putting on comfortable slippers that have been made from a slightly better material (terrible analogy, I know).

I have had an iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S and now 5 and I have followed this late upgrade pattern all the way. Don't regret it for a moment.

It's all very personal - if a high MP camera, fingerprint recognition and permanent 4WD with traction control are important to you - wait until Sept/Oct for the new one.
If not, pull the trigger.

We pulled the trigger last Friday and got iPhone 5 each for both of us. This was expedited by a very enticing great On Account plan and bonus deal from Vodafone, with nice big phone subsidy.

With new announcement, the phone won't be physically released until at least 3-4 months and being in NZ, it would be quite limited quantity as well... so 5-6 months before the supply be adequately available.

Internet is my backyard...

i actually dont agree with the fact that any new tech takes a long time to get to nz, especially big ones like apple. I have seen in the past couple of years that the release times in nz are getting much much better. eg S4 was released first in nz.

Also, the last iphone release, it was available in nz a week after the global launch - ya granted the supply was short, but that is true of any new tech..

i wouldnt expect any new tech to be available in nz more than a month after its global release.

Most things in Tech aren't worth waiting for. But the BEST things are.

I find its best to buy Apple stuff close to release, since prices dont change much and 'the next model' wont be coming for ~12 months + time.

With iphones, buy when it first comes out, because they dont' really drop in price, and you get best value and the most time with ithe newer technology. Although over the last year, I have noticed that resellers of apple devices have been discounting new versions of the ipod touches and nanos by quite a high percentage, which I haven't seen in the past. For example the new ipod touch was down to about $350, when it originally retailed for over $460, and the nano was about $160, when it retails for about $230, which is unlike apple mid cycle. I suspect this is due to low demand.
I with the new iphone has to be quite a big step forward, and will have the new flat ios7 interface. I predict the start button with be at least a bit different to the current one, which will be the first change in that area since it was released.

I am not really that worried about price as it is a work phone and they have agreed to pay the $1349 price.

I am really hoping Apple will see the light and the Iphone6 will have a 5in screen, if that was released at WWDC I'd be absolutely gutted, if they release the 5S with the A6X chip, more ram and a 128gb verion I wouldn't be worried.

I think I will wait for the 14th June then purchase or decide to wait.

Wade: Don't forget iphone 5 onwards is using lightning connector so a lot of your devices may not easily accept new iphone anyway

Personally I would hold off and wait for the new device/s as I suspect it will be the biggest change in iphones to date, they have fallen behind in a lot of ways so need to make up some ground fast. Depending on the big screen and camera rumours coming to fruitition I will update the wifes i4s to a new jobbie upon release as she is finding the small screen a hassle these days and the ip5 jsut doesn't cut it in her opinion

I did consider that, I have the 30pin to lightning connector which I have used on my Ipad to test compatibility and it does work everywhere.

If your existing iPhone were buggered then it would be a tough call. But since you have one that's working perfectly fine I'd say it's a no brainer to wait for the next announcement. Is the iPhone 5 so much better than the iPhone 4 that you desperately need its extra features over the next few months?

Is the iPhone 5 so much better than the iPhone 4 that you desperately need its extra features over the next few months?

the main thing is the extra storage, I have a 32gb but it is always full!

Is the Iphone5 that much better? not sure, there is one other factor, part of my getting a new phone is that my iphone goes to another employee who is pushing quite hard to get his blackberry replaced!

I think I can put this off for a couple of weeks but perhaps not a few months!

You will know more after 10th of june (Apple WWDC), there might be an announcement there - but my money is on them talking about iOS 7 and not the new iPhone, and even if they reveal the new iPhone - its probably not going to be in stores until the fall (september/october)

Personally, I wouldn't want to make Apple any richer than it already is.

I'm sure they'd love it if more people bought a new phone every six months.

DarthKermit, do you stay away from companies making money in general? Do they have to be a spesific size for you to stay away from them? Or are you just not that fond of Apples?

In recent memory can you tell of a phone especially a flagship which has taken 3-4 months for NZ release? The stock levels are low for any new product and that is a worldwide trend. After a month or so they are easily available. I got an iPhone 5 for my wife on 1st November and there was plenty of stock in the market. This is only just a month after the release.

The new phone will be bought on a large Vodafone business account, so I doubt I would have too much trouble getting an early NZ release iphone.

We'll see what the 14th June brings.

iphone4 8gb being discounted locally and some Iphone5's being discounted overseas could indicate something sooner rather than later, but that could be me being optimistic!
