I've heard it kills your battery. But on the plus side iOS 7 makes your phone waterproof.

Oh dear - I'm sure you've been searching all over for answers to this - I hope you've had success (and managed to retrieve your photos). I can't think of anything that you probably haven't tried by now. If it won't boot normally it sounds like you may have to do a full restore as a new device. Even tho your backup is corrupted there is a chance you might be able to look into your backup file and extract your photos. I've found photos in a b/u file on a Mac before... I think it was just a right-click on the file, select show contents and then laboriously preview all the weirdly named files in there. Good luck.

Cheers,
Mike

(maybe actually losing her photos will make wifey use a Samsung ... but will probably get hacked to death so perhaps not a good idea after all)

A solution for lag on the Apple forums for ipad2 suggested you need to do a Reset All Settings after updating. Worked for me, was horrendous beforehand.

Upgrading then restoring all the old apps to the new IOS means some things WILL get out of sync and slow the whole thing down.

Upgrading then starting from fresh should work just fine.

i must be allergic to iOS - i don't understand a thing about apps and backing up on iOS

anyway i've been trying to do this update since 8pm and i'm still at square one

- took about 1 hour to copy photos and videos to back up
- OTA kept failing to start
- itunes hung the update
- resurrected iphone
- another hour to copy more photos and videos as back up
- OTA works!
- OTA stuck at preparing iphone for update
- back to itunes
- it tried to copy all my apps i ever got to my iphone
- manually deleted all the apps it copied
- now hung at update again ... ???

Sorry to hear about the hassles. Glad to hear you finally got it to boot up. It sounds like there must have been a lot of images/videos in the photo library - once backed up did you delete them off the phone? It may be at the outer limits of memory which could be causing the hang. You'd probably want 3 - 4 gigs of headroom during the process.
All I can suggest it going in to settings and doing a full factory reset on the phone (to hopefully put it in a clean state) and then try the upgrade again via iTunes. Good luck.

Both the ipad 2 and iphone 4 are much faster!

BUT ... Battery life is half for ioad coming from ios 5 ... Which i can live with as i used to get 10 hrs out of it

If battery life is half for iphone 4 which on ios 6 only lasts my wife 90% of the day ... Will let yous know ... 830 a,m and already only 88% remaining

Hi - good to hear that you finally sorted it. I think you'll find that there is a lot of initial indexing of files for search purposes that chew through battery, plus there seems to be a lot of options that are on by default, but are not really needed. My wife and daughter both get about the same battery life on iOS 7 as they did on 6.
If you get a chance to Google battery saving tips on iOS 7 you'll get a host of suggestions. One I always suggest is to log out of the iTunes/App store under settings so that it isn't always checking to see what app updates may be waiting for you.

Hmm after a couple of days the battery life has gone to at least the same as prior for the ipad, maybe even better for the iphone

Hmm ...
