alasta: ... it's probably not the huge advancement that it's made out to be.

I haven't had time to check it yet, but apparently there's a table near the bottom of this Wired.com article that compares CarPlay to other competing systems.

Of course this is just "version 1.0" and it remains to be seen what happens in future releases (although as someone else said there's going to be the issue of old car-new devices and old devices-new car) ... or whether it becomes another product Apple cancels.

It's a product Apple won't have a ton of control over the final look and feel either which seems very un-Apple. Every manufacturer will have their own head unit display type with varying types and methods of control, along with differing Bluetooth versions.

Then there's updates. How does Apple go about updating the Carplay software? Is this reliant on plugging it in at a dealer, or will we be able to upload it to the head unit via an iOS device? Many questions...

I loved having direct control of Siri in my last car with a retro fitted Nokia handsfree kit. Siri would do everything I needed at the touch of a button. Our new car has the most annoying built in bluetooth setup I think I've used. Amongst other things it mutes txt and email alerts so I never know when either arrive. When they do arrive I have no way of accessing Siri to deal with them handsfree.

CarPlay is essentially your phone driving a video display - so all the updates will be on the phone.  I think of it as cabled AirPLay Mirroring (where the phone displays a 2nd screen to teh car)

I think they said that it will be available in a small number of 2014 release vehicles, with other manufacturers starting to come on board from next year. It will be a while before those vehicles get released to the NZ market and it would be fair to assume that manufacturers will only implement it when particular models are due for a refresh, so realistically it's going to be at least 2 - 3 years before we see widespread availability.

Incidentally my car is due for replacement in 2 - 3 years so it could be good timing if it does catch on.

I just want it to come to aftermarket products....

There are a number of car makers confirmed / semi-confirmed as bringing CarPlay to their future models, and in almost every price range, from Ferrari through Volvo and Nissan to Hyundai. :-)

That sounds much more flexible, and being cabled removes any Bluetooth issues to boot. Less questions :-)

I'd much prefer it used an independent system/protocal (like Miracast) that will be device agnostic. The problem is the end to end tech just isn't there yet. It needs to be as ubiquitous as Bluetooth has become.

My ideal situation:
Car has a Miracast display to which my phone can stream audio/video. That way I can play music/maps/video to the car from the phone as well as use it for calling (making Bluetooth redundant).

The phone/device would also have software that could have a customised display mode for the car (Like the many 'car mode' android apps out there today), so you could have relevant apps easily at hand as well as an interface that can be interacted with as safely and quickly/easily as possible.

Should also have basic functions available without a connected device (eg. radio/mp2 etc).

Would also be good if certain things on the car could be controlled based on connected device. eg. seat position, driving mode settings, aircon perferences. Alternatively (somewhat in reverse), a smart key could identify the driver, and flow settings through like which device it would connect as the 'driver' when more than one paired device was present.

In my current car, the Bluetooth will first attempt to reconnect to the last phone it was paired to. So if my girlfriend last drove the car alone, the phone would be connected to the Bluetooth. If we then got in the car together next time, the car would connect to her phone regardless of who was driving (usually me)

I think so would most here.  And it sounds like android is working on something similar.  In practice it will be interesting to see what comes.
