I don't know about you but I'd prefer this over a inbuilt proprietary system. Would be nice if the 2nd screen type interface was open - so the car just mirrored either android/Windows Phone/IOS - but at least multiple support might be available.

Given your phone most likely has music and other media, and a mapping program you're happy with the idea appeals to me (when it's relaxed somewhat).

It seems completely mental to buy a big ticket item like a car that has vendor lock-in to that extent.

If it's an optional extra - fine. Otherwise I want the options to remove it and have a bog standard entertainment unit with bluetooth.

I'm really hoping that after market radios will come. Nothing worse that buying a car from about 2008 with an ancient radio, no real concept of iPhone connectivity (or android), USB and dated GPS maps. I want my phone to power it, I always know the maps are up to date, it can get other information (waze, traffic etc) and can pull music from local or internet.

From what I've read so far, which admittedly isn't a lot, it looks like being a bit of a half-baked dog's breakfast.

CarPlay appears to be a way of controlling the iOS device (some of it anyway) via the car's own systems and and having the results on the car's display, but the car still has it's own proprietary system as well since obviously not everyone has an iOS device. It would be better, although more problematic given differing display sizes, etc., for the car to fully use iOS for it's own features as well, rather than having two differing systems, although that would require Apple to license iOS, which is undoubtly does not want to do.

Currently the iOS device also must be plugged in via a Ligthning connector, but a Wi-Fi version is coming "soon".

I'd much rather have that than baked in IOS in the car. Something like a wi-di/2nd screen technology where the phone is doing the hard work and providing a video feed to the car, so allthe car manufacturers need to worry about is the navigating the screens and their own car management info.

And plugged in is fine by me, means it can be charging - I do this now with a sony car stereo and usb connection to my iphone.

I dream of the day where you car's head unit is nothing but a facade that provides in-dash interaction (screen + touch control) to your phone, nothing more, nothing less.

Then it would use all the phone's features (gps, conenctivity, etc...) and could be personalised per user.

I would really hate for this to be an Apple only thing so. Just like all these head units feature these "made for iphone" logos all over the show and have these fancy features that only work with iphones, i worry that one day you will buy a car and be told that you need an iphone to use its entertainment system to its fullest.

yeah me too (the apple only). Essentially, I want the car to have a usb/mhl/bt/wifi direct connection to be used by anything.

But you know given it's apple, they wont do anything the anyone else can use. And then samsung will come along and do their own version and the rest of android will be left out in the cold (look at Apple's Airplay and Samsung's AllShare).

I think this is a good idea.

But I'm left thinking... whats the point? I already have a decent $50 car mount so my phone fits snugly next to my car radio and effectively does the same thing.

The trouble is a lot of people are going to buy cars when they are 5 to 10 years old in which case it could all be outdated and semi useless unless you have an older iphone

I have an Alpine aftermarket stereo in one of my cars which was cutting edge in its day, 4 years on it is now semi-obsolete as it is 30 pin connector only, wife upgraded her phone and new one no go.

I doubt car manufacturers will support the head units beyond a few years nor will they update it for every new iOS device so i wouldnt hold high hopes for it being the be all and end all of incar entertainment

Just to use the entertainment system?!? Nope, you're gonna *HAVE* to have an Apple iPhone to even be able to start the car. ;-)

Side note: At one stage Steve Jobs actually was apparently interested in Apple making cars and more recently there was a (currently debunked) rumour that Apple was in talks to buy out the electric car maker Tesla.

I would quite like to have this in my next car but it's probably not the huge advancement that it's made out to be. My current car has iPod/iPhone integration for playing music and the generic bluetooth solution handles phone calls. I doubt Apple Maps would offer much benefit over existing satnav systems other than keeping the maps up to date more easily, and Siri integration would be nice but I think some GM vehicles are already offering this.

i dunno, I've used a few gps systems and they were pretty slow and hard to use - and while these cars were cheapish now - they were not when they were first purchased. Also offline maps, how quaint.

No I'd rather have the maps that are on my phone, backed by real time data, but designed for use in a car - phones as good as they are, are not great for being used while driving (ie for navigation etc). Things like the BMW iDrive and Audis MMI the control systems are fairly easy to use for navigating menus etc so I'd say it's a good fit to have the navigation of menus being operated by the car, but the grunt and apps being driven by the phone.

There are already plenty of modern examples where cars are intergated fully into the Apple ecosystem, with hard-wired iPod/iPhone docks, stereo's that only play nice with iOS, iphone-sized slots for iPhones/iPods, etc, etc.

It's not such a huge leap to think someone will get in bed completely with Apple and make an iOS-controlled car...even if it's a singular variant of a popular car - it would sell in droves (see what I did there?)...

True, but I still don't see it being that much of a leap...Apple have deep pockets, lots of influence and a dedicated legion of followers (me included).
