I like dot-point upgrades because they hopefully improve stability rather than introducing features.

I've been having a lot of hard crashes on my iPad lately so hopefully this might help.

Well, it worked fine on my iPhone 5S but my 3rd generation iPad spat the dummy. After downloading the update and attempting to install it demanded that I connect to iTunes which then reported that the device was in 'recovery mode'. I am now attempting to install the update and restore a backup via iTunes.

I turn off wifi at work as IOS forgets the password and brings up a dialog box hundreds of times
a day asking for my log and pass.

Not a fix for any proxy issues, but to stop getting nagged about joining networks you should be able to select the option to NOT be asked if you want to join known networks. Settings > WiFi
That used to annoy me too when doing stuff on the phone to keep getting asked if you want to join a network.

Updated on the 4S earlier today, all works well. Disappointed the dark keyboard that was in the betas has been removed.

When did turn by turn navigation get so amazingly good? Used it on the way home tonight, via Siri, and it looks brilliant.

What happens if you don't ave a computer, as supposedly you don't need to have a computer to have a newer idevice? My ipad went through quite a lot of restarts and appeared to crash on the lock screen insitally, but it now seems to have updated. Seems like a really crude update this time in the way it updated, but it is the first update that didn't wipe my telecom APN settings

What happens if you don't ave a computer, as supposedly you don't need to have a computer to have a newer idevice? I wondered about that myself. I would be really in trouble if I didn't have access to iTunes.

I really like this update. The phone has sped up, and no longer chokes in the odd point (the refresh email inbox animation for example) that it used to.

Hope you got it sorted. I guess apple will help you if their own software update fails, and it has bricked it. I am always a bit nervous updating mine, but you have to do it to keep it secure.

To be fair this is the first OTA update that's gone pear shaped for me, but I think OTA updates have only been supported on iOS for the last couple of years so it's hard to judge how prevalent these types of failures are. It would be fair to say that I don't have a lot of confidence in Apple at the moment, so in future I will be doing these updates one device at a time and only when I have enough time on my hands to deal with any potential issues that may arise.

Regarding problems with over the air updates - it would seem to be that troubles occur the day of a new s/w release. Yes, the servers should be able to handle it, but these global releases cause massive demand... everyone seems to need the new hotness straight away.. and sluggish download speeds result in unhappy experiences.
I tend to be a bit old-school: wait 2 days or so for bugs/problems to be discovered and demand to drop off, plus I generally prefer to grab the 'full' OS via iTunes and update that way (I also like to do the whole combo update for Mac OS instead of just the incremental updates). Yeah...., belt AND braces.

This specific issue may well be an isolated case but it is the latest in a long line of other unrelated problems.

You don't need a computer but it is faster as you don't have to download everything from scratch during a restore. If you use iCloud backup (which you should) you can restore your phone from that.
