paulmilbank: Z2 or Z3 might be a good comparison to try the same test on.

Ran into a piece of steel attached to a 20t guillotine at work with my Z1 in my pocket, bent a tiny bit and broke my screen (actually bruised my leg too)... straightened it, tried to bend it again to show the mrs how bent it was but I couldn't do it to the extreme of that iphone.
I think the sony frame is a tad thicker (as is the phone in general).

I'm not even going to try on the Z2, unless someone else pays :)

No not really. Price and target have nothing to do with it. They share no similar build properties other than the glass screen and size. But if they were made of similar materials and form factor (thin-ness and dimensions etc) then yes by all means compare.

If lets say a Mercedes-Benz SUV cost 60K, and one of their new cars cost 60K also. They're completely different in terms of build etc but ones obviously going to handle a crash better off. Sure they're both the same price but does that mean they should both be completely equal in terms of being able to handle a crash?

Yes. That's what ANCAP rating represent.

All expensive cars meet 5 star rating.

Cars made by Great Wall China has 3 star rating.

In a crash both cars will bend.

Hence don't sit on things

But what guy doesn't store his cellphone in his front pocket?! Telling people 'just don't sit on it' like saying don't use it for calls. Ludicrous.

Edit: ok, kinda right, don't let it be stressed in your pocket is a better statement.

Totally agree.
However, as this thread on reddit shows, the issue is people who don't exert an inordinate amount of strain on their devices in their day to day activities, yet have a slightly bent phone.

The issue is not bending it to the point of cracking, had I just spent $1000 on a new fancy device and for it to have a little warp after a week of use I'd be pissed!

I feel a class lawsuit coming on (in the US). Apple may have to rush out the structural equivalent of the rubber bumper produced to get around 'grip-gate'. Then again it may be a marketing ploy to say "see told you 4 inches was the right size for a phone". ;-)

not really.

this has been reported by normal daily day-to-day users (ie. apple fans themselves)

i have note 3. i am also a volunteer firefighter. i have my phone store in all sorts of places, i threw my note 3 every now and then when i have to rush. it is rock solid for almost 1 year now - no bend at all.

I'd like to know if this is staged, real, or an issue at all. Off course a thin gadget will bend if sufficient force applied. Is that real life? I cannot see a 6 Plus bending in usual day to day situations. Its hard to know who to trust when these stories surface

Apple tinted glasses maybe?

Standby for the iPhone 6T or 6A (for titanium or adamantium respectively).
Or possibly a free pair of cargo pants (via redemption) with every new iPhone.

There have been suggestions that the phone should be stored in your pocket with the glass facing towards your leg but to me that will exaggerate the bend when sitting. All the pictures I have seen show the bend being away from the screen. The screen is probably the strongest structural element and it is slightly flexible, therefore that load is transferred to the aluminum body. Aluminum is reasonably ductile and will fatigue over time. Those people who have said they just straighten the handset are asking for trouble as it will eventually fail.

Quite surprised that there are people complaining about the 6 as well as the 6+.

Liked the Samsung phone test video. Especially the butt cheek test, but surely 100kg wouldn't be enough for the american market?

I put "HTC bend" into a search and it returned anecdotal evidence of their metal bodied phones being susceptible to some deformation. Same sort of comments that have already arisen from iPhone forums. None are as marked, or have happened as quickly as the Apple products though. I was particularly looking for evidence of the One Max with its 5.9 inch screen being susceptible to this problem.

Not at all. I wouldnt expect any phone to be bending in normal use. And this was an issue for the 5 as well? Never heard that before until now. I had a 5 and 5S, they seem pretty solid to me. I can see any phablet bending in a rear pocket if sat on, but normal use? If its true, then its a fail
