Question for the mods.

Can you please clarify why a thread regarding WM6 on the Apache was closed as it was considered an ilegal use of the software, but this thread which also discusses software that breaks Apples carrier lock is OK?

Not wanting to troll, just wanting a level playing field.

You see, this is why Vodafone does not support parallel imported handset - they are not tested to work and cannot be guaranteed to work. The handsets should work with the network, not the other way around so asking Vodafone to change their network because of one model can break a lot for other people who uses phone that actually work, right?

Yes, you are absolutely correct, hence the use of a smiley.

Yes but a majority of mobiles do work with vodafone. It only happens with mobiles that have been lock. Those are the ones that causes problem.

I refuse to buy mobiles in NZ especially vodafone

BEcause unlocking a phone is not illegal. Using a copyrighted ROM with other copyrighted software added into the mix is.

There are two separate issues regarding the iPhone and SMS, neither of them are Vodafone's problem. (It's the risk you take using unsupported hardware and software)

One is due apparently to an incomplete implementation on the iPhone's part. This affects messages sent with a sender address which made up of non numeric characters, (this is believed to be the reason why normal voicemail txt's don't appear on the iPhone). This usually on effects a limited number of "special" txt services.

The second issue is to do with certain software unlocks, which copy and modify the iPhones baseband firmware, somehow introduces a bug which mean no txt messages at all are received.

The fix for the second problem is to reflash the baseband with the original firmware and use a different unlock. Depending on how the software unlock you used works, it may not be fixed by a restore in iTunes, you may have to delve into the command line on the phone stop the commcenter and run 'bbupdater -f ICE03.14.08_G.fls' followed by 'bbupdater -e ICE03_14_08_G.eep' where the ICE files are extracted from a clean iPhone firmware image. Then try a different unlock method.

Did you buy this iphone from a parallel importer, already unlocked? If you did, then you should be covered by the consumer guarantees act (yes this does apply to parallel importers). As if the phone is not functioning as it should (i.e. receiving text is a normal and expected function of any mobile phone you buy today), then you would have grounds to take it back for fixing or a refund.

However, if you did the unlocking yourself, then you're on your own here.

Either way, remember this is not a Vodafone NZ issue.

Apple may not entirely agree with you there.

Off topic. But since you commented, I am always interested to know why people support Apple with their closed systems...

... because they make some great products. Just because some parts of their systems are "closed", doesn't necessarily make those products bad and not worth purchasing, it's almost always done for a reason.

I dont think its just apple - PSP, PS3, Xbox etc.

All of these products could be opened to allow development but the issue is that the first thing anyone seems to develop is a way to play copied games. In the case of the iPhone I'm guessing they will have lucative licensing deals for content and systems that will only work if Apple\carriers can lock users into a payment plan to cover them.

Example.
If xbox 360 console sells at a loss then Microsoft has to sell games to make up that cost in the long run. That becomes harder to achieve if anyone at all can write software for the platform without a licence fee being paid to Microsoft (I know this is not the same as a phone but you get the idea.).

The subsidised lock-in is one reason for operating a "closed" system.

Obviously that's not the case with the iPhone. But remember with the iPhone, Apple is entering a market it has absolutely no experience in, the cut throat cell phone industry with a few BIG competitors. They really had to partner with a carrier to bring the phone to market successfully, they have to partner with a carrier to get them to introduce features like visual voicemail. I don't think it was a decision based solely on screwing over carriers for ongoing revenue "sharing". After all, there's little doubt that they could make a LOT more money by offering the iPhone unlocked world wide now. Logistically, for a company with no previous experience in the industry, it would be a huge job to pull-off a world wide release, supporting a multitude of carriers, and maintain Apples desire to have the most seamless user experience. So a lot of it comes down to support reasons I think.

Your the first person i've heard of with trouble receiving all sms in NZ.

Reflashing the baseband and unlocking with another method may fix it. It's not a process for the inexperienced however.

It involves downloading the firmware image:

then extracting the two ICE files from it. plus the bbupdater utility. load them into the /bin directory on the iphone and run them as previously mentioned in this thread.

The BB should be restored to it's original state (all going to plan) Then you can attempt to unlock again.

What process did you use to unlock?  Is this service SMS or any sms?

I did:

1) unpack
2) Update to 1.02
3) Ibrickr install
4) lockdown activation fix
5) anysim install and run
6) re-do lockdown fix
7) fix EDGE settings

presto.

You're absolutely certain it's the phone?
