KiwiNZ: I am looking for a light weight mobile device I have looked at the reviews for this device, it is pretty and the Apple trackpads are the best in the business but I have many doubts about this device

Old style MBA is a bit larger, but still small and much faster.

Try XPS 13 (2015) as second best

The MBA is a contender and a good device. After dealing with Dell professionally I am not keen on the XPS 13(2015) although on paper it looks a good device.

Despite the outrageous price, I am still seriously considering getting one. I have used an iPad 2 for 4 years as my primary travel device to go to conferences, take notes, access info, log into work remotely, work on documents etc. I value lack of weight the highest, closely followed by battery life and screen clarity. I have put up with the limitations of the iOS interface, because of the sheer readability and small form factor of the iPad. As my eyesight isnt what it used to be, I looked at the 11 inch MBA, but decided the native resolution was just a fraction too small. I am hoping that one of the screen resolutions on the retina display of the new MB will hit the sweet spot with excellent sharpness.

Because I have put up with a single port on the iPad for so long, the single port on the new MB doesnt bother me. The biggest hurdle is the price...

I ordered one the other day (from Apples website) and the estimated delivery is between 15 - 28 May.

Just received the MacBook unit and I have to say the Trackpad is pretty impressive! I actually was fooled into thinking it was a normal "click" but once I turned off the MacBook, there was no "click"! Impressive!

The 256GB one. Both not much difference in specs.

When I was setting it up, it was literally loading this screen for 10 minutes! So I had to force shutdown and start all over again lol.

We've sold a few of the new MacBook Pro's with the Force Touch trackpad and it is nice and you wouldn't even know it wasn't a real click.

Also just got in our first Mac Pro so going to have a look at that soon. cool

The old style MBA is a really compelling notebook due to its cost/performance/battery ratio in ultrabook space, the new MBA is the most compromised notebook I've seen in a long time. Higher cost, slower performance, less battery life, less ports. Its the most expensive netbook ever it seems. That said, have a look, I'm sure it will go over well with folks who think 'all things Apple are just-so-good'

You do mean the new MacBook and not MacBook Air right?

The new MacBook has received pretty much the same welcome as the MBA did when it launched. I am happy with my 2013 MBA 13", I probably wouldn't have been happy with the 13" MBA when it launched. It came with a 64GB (very expensive) SSD, or with a slow regular HD, and with seriously underpowered processor.

Does that remind you of something vs the new MacBook?

For someone without the need for a lot of power and connections, the new MacBook will be brilliant. Its ultra-light weight and has good batterytime, and it has a nice retina display.

For me it would just be grief at the moment, but in a couple of revisions I would not rule out changing the MBA to a new MacBook. For me the ports is not the main issue, although that too is going to be painful for anyone actually needing to connect to anything but power. My main issue with the new 12" MacBook is that the MBA gives more value for money (processor etc) for my needs, and the M-processor is probably underpowered for what I do.

nathan: yes shipping in 4-6 weeks

from NZ$1,999

I can not figure out the point of the new MacBook.

It cost's more than the Air's, and its slower.  Apple will sell you a $129 accessory to get all your MacBook ports back.

Only in Apple-land is matching 4 yr old Mac performance good news.

take my comments with a grain of salt as I am biased, but right :)

As a porn watching, Facebook picture uploading, twitter updating, Wordpress poster it does the job pretty well but then again like any 1.0 product it'll have its limitations in much the same way that the Yoga 3 and friends have their own limitations - the question is whether those limitations overlap with what you want to do but for me the MacBook Pro is a good compromise between power and light weight portability. I'm sure when there is a future shrink plus updated architecture there will be an improvement in performance but the benefit is the fact that it is fanless, super thin, light weight with the icing on the cake being that it runs OS X. Personally I'm more excited about the next version of Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac and the improvements that'll come with a more rapid release schedule.

I bought a maxed out MacBook Pro 13.3" and I love it - the pad feels like an actual click even though there isn't any movement. Looking forward to the skylake iMac refresh and once that is out I'm going to jump in and get a maxed out 27" :P

Was it Bill Bennetts blog I read recently, saying the MB 12 as a viable alternative to the iPad? You get light and small, slightly bigger screen, and a full OS. I think that might well be a fair comparison, a way to enjoy light and small, without the restrictions of iOS. perhaos its a competitor to the SP3? In that if you have light and small, and you have a full OS, you dont really need a tablet OS. You could rtreat a MB12 witjh OSX as an app device, as OSX UI allows that, just 4 finger swipe to go from desktop to Application icion view

Cost wise, $2k isn;t bad compared to $1400 for my 128GB iPad Air. 600 bucks more and if ui get the same viewing experience, and a full OS when I want that, thats not too bad. Faster than an iPad Air?

BUT, when I play say Lightbox on my iPad its sweet as a nut, smoothness-wise. On my i7 rMBP, 8GB, 512SSD its not quite there, so the app solution is better than a browser streaming  solution, I've always seen this, SkyGo is the same. I'd not want to lose that

Got one for my wife, she surprisingly didn't like gold. She said it actually looks darker yellow than her iPhone. She chose slate grey. Lovely piece of hardware. I have had a short play with it only but will put up some update later this week. It's 512gb version. There are a few in Melbourne.
