Anyone know when the new MacBook 12 inch retina model will be in stores so we can see what they are really like in the flesh?

yes shipping in 4-6 weeks

from NZ$1,999

I can not figure out the point of the new MacBook.

It cost's more than the Air's, and its slower.  Apple will sell you a $129 accessory to get all your MacBook ports back.

Only in Apple-land is matching 4 yr old Mac performance good news.

Like the MBA was when it first came out, it's more the introduction of a new form factor and the entry into the market of a new shift in thinking with less ports etc.  Air did away with DVD but was incredibly slow to begin with.  MacBook has done away with other ports and major internal changes, but it is hampered by performance and won't mature for a couple of revisions.

Apple just like to get the new form factors into the market early to force a seachange as they know competitors will want to make their products look and feel similar, and by the time that happens the market will be accepting enough of the tradeoffs.

Doesn't work in all cases, but is considered a safe bet by them nowadays.

difference being now you can buy an ultrabook with similar build quality that is smaller, faster, cheaper and with more ports.

The whole one port to rule them all sounds nice, until you need a $100 adapter for anything useful, and you can only use one at a time.

Regardless, they will sell millions of them and the great self-congratulation will continue.

The old style MBA is a really compelling notebook due to its cost/performance/battery ratio in ultrabook space, the new MBA is the most compromised notebook I've seen in a long time. Higher cost, slower performance, less battery life, less ports.

Its the most expensive netbook ever it seems.

That said, have a look, I'm sure it will go over well with folks who think 'all things Apple are just-so-good'

I like the form factor, I don't like the port restriction and being a Mac users for many years I am not sure OS X is going to work to enthrall on this machine

I realise you can get it in that time frame ordering via the Apple website but I want to be able to play with a real version before doing that. So I'm asking "when demo versions will be in stores like DSE and JBHifi? "

I'm getting a MacBook for a review and it should've been here yesterday. Couriers.

Anyway, I was speaking with someone close to Apple and they said the main point of the MacBook with less ports is because people that buy the MacBook are supposed to use everything wirelessly.

review:
beautiful, thin, light, expensive, slow, terrible front facing camera

I am looking forward to trying out the force feedback trackpad though

Yep me too. It will definitely be a very interesting experience without the usual click click click.

I am looking for a light weight mobile device I have looked at the reviews for this device, it is pretty and the Apple trackpads are the best in the business but I have many doubts about this device

from MacRumors:

"There's a new Force Touch trackpad that incorporates technology from the Apple Watch, bringing a new pressure-based gesture called "Force Click." With a click followed by a harder press, users can do tasks like pulling up a word definition, seeing a map, or looking at a file preview. The trackpad also incorporates haptic feedback for a tactile response when it's used."

Sounds like fun ... but not worth $2k.
