I have gone off big phones, as they are a pain to carry and use one handed. I like the form factor of the iphone 5 screen size. As I mainly use it for data, I was tempted by the new ipod touch which is apparently faster or as fast as the current iphones, although they killed that for me by not adding in touch ID, which is madness for a new apple device.

I read an interesting article a while ago about the marketing involved in offering such a small amount of storage and what it boiled down to was Apple wanted to drive people towards the more expensive 64GB model. The markup for the extra 48GB was excessive thereby increasing their OEM margin. By not offering a base model with the industry standard 32GB they definitely drive people to upsize.
Not an iPhone user myself but may pick up a 6 for my wife when the 6S squashes the price.
For me the phablet sizes, be it an iPhone6(S)+ or Note 5, are just too big to be a pocketable phone.

Quite possibly, that's Marketing. The other argument is cloud based usage. Spotify means songs aren't needed on the device. Cloud appears to be the way of the future, although not for me.

To go from the 16 to 64 at $170 doesn't seem that excessive. if thats too much then the buyer can't probably realistically afford the 16

I've mostly mitigated the issue with an iCloud accont and purchasing $1.30 worth of extra space (20GB?), seems to do the trick nicely as a lot of space was just photos. The rest seems to come from the stupidly sized apps that insist on taking up 50MB for what amounts to a glorified web app.

Having not used one before, this is my biggest concern around going phablet. I'm banking on the play that I no longer have an iPad so hoping that running a 5.5inch screen "mini-mini" might mitigate this for me. Of course, I still have to lug it around and I don't expect it to fit comfortably into my jeans pocket anymore...

I like the form factor of the iphone 5 screen size.

Fortunately, I have an iPhone 5 from work which I'll continue to run until they replace it (which may not be too far off, given it's age). This is also a boon for me as I make the vast majority of actual phone calls on my work unit so won't have to worry too much about looking like the phablet dorks that I've mocked up to this point...

Work phone 5S is due for replacement in a couple of months. I may hang out a bit longer and get whatever new 6 model is available. I am reluctant to go bigger than the 5S for pocket comfort but I think the 6 may be OK. Looking forward to a bit more speed and force touch looks interesting if that is included.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

They new design wasn't introduced that long ago, and the previous design lasted for many years.

According to the interweb, the originals earbuds were introduced in 2008, updated a couple of times with remote, remote & mic, then the EarPods released in September 2012 with the iPhone 5.

Based on this loose info schedule, they should be due a revision...

I don't have a problem with the EarPods, they sound a whole lot better than the old headphones they had and don't fall out of my ears. Not really sure what they would update on them.

I found an article from post release of the 6 and 6+ which included a teardown analysis. The additional 48GB of storage was estimated to cost Apple about $US20.
Likewise the additional component and manufacturing that goes into the 6+ over the 6 amounts to $US15. It is just brilliant marketing and a great profit model.

Just got a 6+ 128GB so will give this upgrade a miss.

Must say I never thought I would want such a big phone but now I can't see myself with anything smaller.

lots of examples of this across multiple industries, of pricing your products at what the market will bear.

The *big* fall in the NZ dollar re: US Dollar is gonna cause a big price spike, <br><br>
The current entry point of $1079 will likely become nearer $1300...

Yep, exactly my point. Samsung have cottoned on to the same scheme and in fact their cost per GB is higher on that basis. The difference is 32GB is an acceptable amount of non-expandible storage in a phone at the moment 16 isn't. I have just been in a place where internet is really expensive so the cloud wasn't an option. Thank goodness my device was 32GB and I had an OTG cable and some USB sticks loaded with movies.
My fervent hope is that Apple will drop the 16GB model in the 6S, but I'm not holding my breath.
