I do too. But sometimes it doesn't see my desired Apple TV (I have two of them), so I have no choice but to use the remote for input (actually our Logitech Universal Remote, but the input is just as clunky with either one).

It's true, Siri is restricted to 8 countries at launch and we're not one of them.

It looked like it worked really well during the demo.

I don't understand why we can't use it when we already have Siri, hopefully with a software update it'll be switched on. Or if we change the language in the settings, who knows.

I'm in favour of using it, voice search on the Amazon Fire TV is outstanding and so much more user friendly than typing.

Yeah, thats the real kicker. We're have official Siri support on iOS now, so I'm not sure what the deal is.

I also heard talk that the non-Siri versions of the ATV have a different remote (sans mics), but I'm not sure if that is true or speculation. If it requires a hardware upgrade to get it later, that would be a real dick move (although it would be inline with Apples normal business model of planned obsolescence).

Yes I read that too, but if you compare the tech specs pages of the device on the US and NZ Apple sites it does appear they're identical hardware wise. Here it's called Apple Remote and the Siri button is just called Search instead.

Hopefully it's a bedding in period then a software update to enable it rather than a dick business decision as you've mentioned.

I watched the whole keynote last night and if I remember correctly, it will be available to everyone by end of the year. I'll be getting one, just on the strength of it having an open app store. If I can cut down the number of devices I need to access the content I want, it'll be worth it.

I think I'll be putting one on the wish list.

I can see it being a box for all-comers (apple users or not). If Sky, TVNZ, TV3, Lightbox, PLP and others develop Apps for it, it will be the one box to rule them all that we have been waiting for.

They should have apps ready to go (although, there is deafening silence from them at the moment, surely they have access to the SDK and will know if it is just a case of porting the iPad App?) at launch.

Plex I imagine will happen pretty fast too.

Count me in. Bar a couple of nit picky niggles this is the ATV we have been waiting for. The App Store alone opens it right up. I'll still need my WDTV to play files from my NAS but never expected that to be in the new ATV for a minute.

Of course if Roku was legitimately sold in NZ it'd probably do just as well. But because it's not, no local company with write an app for it.

The only worry I have is whether those pesky rights arrangements will prevent them from doing so - the same thing that prevents them from enabling airplay at the moment. Although for the life of me I can't work out what the legal difference is between being able to watch on a PC plugged into your TV screen via HDMI (which I do now) and being able to watch on a media streaming box plugged into your TV screen via HDMI. Maybe that's why I'll never be a lawyer.

I'll be getting one pretty quickly when they come out. I've got four at the moment but having SDK's and Apps available will make this significantly better. Can't wait. Hope the local broadcasters and streaming services get working on their apps smartly.

There are plenty of android ones that will stream 4k video. Only need HDMI 1.4 to get it at 24/25/30 Hz, HDMI 2.0 gets you to 60 Hz so is acceptable for gaming (but it seems 30 is acceptable in the console world anyway)

2 years back, no 4k would be fine. Now its as absurd on a brand new product.

Why ?
I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my HD tv.

I also don't see me "upgrading" my TVs for the next 5-10 years

Hell, I still buy DVDs, not blueray.

4K TV is right up there with the special ethernet cables that audiophiles use.

Well I use Netflix on my Apple TV, and if it could do the others (lightbox etc) then I would kill off Sky TV.

I have ZERO interest in "channels" any more, Netflix has changed me to "Programs" where I can watch a whole season of what ever over a week or two at my own pace in my own time.

Sky TV is full of absolute CRAP, Repeats and adverts, sure with Skys recorder we can watch when we want, but it is not the same.

For example on Netflix I am working my way through the entire back catalog of Dr Who, can't do that on sky.
Then there was the Series "Dare Devil", brilliant, a more adult version of your typical super hero genre.

Just like MP3 players singled the change from Tapes/CDs to something more portable, then the iPod came out and go so much more "right"
I think previous streaming boxes were the start and Apple has got a lot of other things "right" , so this may be the start of the collapse
of ordinary TV and the likes of Sky/Cable TV.

Other players in the market are now making quality programming, existing media/advertisers are having less impact/authority in the market.

I certainly would not be owning shares in any of these old guard companies, the future does not look good for them.
And once companies get rid of geo locking, the collapse will be more like an avalanche .

For me, no Siri, no purchase.

I am happy to wait until we get the full product.

Sad to see that Marketing is gaining a strangle hold on Apple again, they damn near killed Apple once with their dickish moves.

Has anyone seen commentary on whether earlier Apple TVs will also get the software upgrade? It would be great to get apps for TVNZ, TV3 etc on the older boxes, even if they can't run games.

According to this article, it's highly unlikely. From a marketing perspective I couldn't see them wanting to make it less attractive to buy the new more expensive box.
