The PS3/4 have TVNZ on Demand back again so not completely exclusive to Samsung. The app is quite clunky and buggy compared to the likes of Netflix and Youtube but gives good HD quality when working. It demonstrates there's not a lot of money in the pot for TVNZ to roll out these things.

Does TVNZ still consider using their On Demand  and Chromecasting piracy??

Reply from TVNZ - very woolly and vague.

That's a disappointing response.

We tried using the PS4 app on Sunday afternoon, but it failed to stream properly. Either the stream wouldn't start, or after a little while the video would pause but the audio would keep playing.

With Lightbox app for Apple TV and the Fanpass app for Apple TV imminent, according to the NBR, maybe there will be increased pressure for TVNZ to develop it.

[Although I note there are no updates in the Store, nor any details on the relevant websites!]

TVNZ really do seem to be shooting themselves in the foot re this refusal to release their on demand app on the ATV4.  I was just looking at the TV3 app on the Apple TV and its great, good quality video, not too many ads, reasonable IA.  Unlike when I was a child, my kids watch next to nothing on broadcast TV in realtime.  What they do watch is 99% on demand (Netflix etc) or streaming.   Although its neat that it is possible, even they are going off watching things on small screens or computer monitors - now we've moved from the earlier Apple TV to the ATV4 there is both Netflix, streaming off the PC and other services like TV3, TV4 etc.. available on a real TV.  If TVNZ doesn't want to be there then its at their peril.

With TVNZ moving its Kidzone content to online only I'm sure that the under-10 demographic is clearly in their sights.  Interestingly TVNZ's OnDemand viewing (both streams and duration) arent growing compared to last year.  The Netflix effect and not expanding its reach via different platforms will surely be having an effect.

Its a stupid move. But given the backwards ways of many NZ media companies (here is looking at YOU Sky!), its not that surprising.

It irritates me that I have to switch to the Samsung SmartTV to watch TVNZ, because everything else is on the AppleTV 4. Having to use any other remote at this point feels wrong ;)

The big problem is that 35,000 views per week for the top programs (or 200,000 views per day across all programs) doesnt justify for a lot of development given the minimal advertising load on those programs.  While viewership was growing new development probably got backburnered - now with metrics turning over TVNZ may feel the pressure to spend to grow audience.  Its not backward, just economic.

I can't imagine a tvOS app would be that hard to develop if they already have an iOS app - I'm assuming (as a total layman) that the ecosystems are pretty similar. Like jarledb, I'm starting to get to the point where it feels like too much hassle to fire up the PS3 or HTPC to watch TVNZ On Demand. I've been using other apps on the ATV4 to watch some of the shows, like The 100, which is available on Hulu in sparkly high-definition.

Low viewership is because the app on the samsungs is a laggy piece of crap, on the PS3 it seldom works, and who wants to watch on a phone without the ability to cast to a larger screen.

Android app wont work on a set top box because of their paranoia over rooting and HDMI output. So that leaves hulu/BBC iplayer/itv etc as the ideal source for that same content. Which they will never see the use of so think there is no demand.

Cant expect demand when the platform is so crap at the moment. Apple TV box would let them have it nativly on a TV without their fear of android and HDMI out getting in the way.

Totally agree - it's a chicken and egg situation - streaming numbers are low because the available means to watch it are not convenient, so they don't put money into app development because viewer numbers are low. I'm sure there are a lot like me who want to watch their TV on a TV screen. I can cast it from a browser tab to my Chromecast but it's still an extra hassle.

Yes, not sure I agree with the low viewership argument either.  Sure its easy enough for all of us to moan on this forum about what TVNZ 'should do' but as someone else pointed out - they've already done the iOS app for iPhone and iPad (and redeveloped it at least once).  The ATV thing is not a completely seperate app but an extension of the existing iOS one.  Companies like TVNZ need to have a presence on these other platforms if they want to maintain market share - Netflix is eating their lunch (and SKY's) at the moment.  Speaking personally, my family sure would consume content via a TVNZ on demand app on the ATV.  If Mediaworks managed it quickly and elegantly I don't buy the argument that TVNZ can't or shouldn't because there is not enough in it for them.
