Note that iTunes 12.7 (released a few days ago) apparently removes the ability to copy an .ipa file from your computer onto your phone. If you rely on this feature then I suggest that you submit feedback to Apple to restore the functionality.

I thought you could still drag and drop and the ipa file onto the phone, but iTunes can no longer download or manage apps.

That's good news if true. I haven't installed 12.7 myself but I asked whether that was possible on another forum and didn't get a response. If I have time tonight I'll upgrade my spare machine and try it out.

Apple say drag and drop is still supported

"If you have media on your computer that you can't redownload from the App Store or iTunes Store directly on your iOS device, such as custom ringtones or iOS apps, you can drag and drop the media from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes."

Thanks for that link. I'd heard that it was possible for ringtones but it's good to see that it works for apps too.

Now the question is how to get the .ipa files in the first place now that there's no App Store inside iTunes.

When you backup your iphone and restore, the apps that are no longer on app store are all lost.

Not an iPhone but... I upgraded my iPad Air 1 to an iPad Pro and set it up using a full iTunes backup on my Windows PC. It installed every app from the iPad Air, including some that are no longer available on the App Store.

You could just accept that the app is out of date and no longer supported and move on. I am sure there are other options that could do the same thing, or why not just access what you want on-line? The concept of having a copy or owning content is just about redundant I think.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
