Apparently starting from iOS 9, you can't backup an app anymore.

I'd like to back up an app because it is no longer on the app store and I paid for it. When you backup your iphone and restore, the apps that are no longer on app store are all lost. Need this done because wife is getting a replacement phone due to screen damage.

Any ideas?

Connect your phone to iTunes, sync it all.
"Transfer Purchases. This should move the app to your computer."

"Restore Purchases. when setting up the new phone from with in iTunes."

How long ago did they stop making it? If it's a 32bit app, as of iOS11 it won't work anyway.

No idea. About 1 year I think. It's an app that allows downloading of youtube videos onto the phone :)

Bugger, Thats the only known way as everything is encrypted. Suppose it would have been removed on copyright grounds and chances are it won't allow it on the new device.
32 bit and 64 bit apps would also be in question here.

It's not about being allowed on new device. Apparently since iOS9, when you backup your phone, they only backup a thinned line or something, and when you restore, the phone downloads the app from itunes and not get it from the computer (because the computer has no app backed up).

There is one way to backup new apps, apparently if you check automatically download apps onto computer itunes (when you download it onto device), then it downloads the app. But I don't see how it can work since I cannot download the app anymore since it's not on app store.

Dangled the Android carrot to missus but nope she'd rather stick with iOS.

Thanks I'll give that a go one day. I don't have time for these BS, but one day when I'm free. Thanks again.

Note that iTunes 12.7 (released a few days ago) apparently removes the ability to copy an .ipa file from your computer onto your phone. If you rely on this feature then I suggest that you submit feedback to Apple to restore the functionality.

I doubt they would listen to anything I say. The only way is for my wife to go Android ... you're never too involved in the Dark Side to turn good. I can feel the good in her ...

Haha. I remember a few years ago suggesting to my wife to let go of her iPhone and NOTHING would convince her, until ........ I came home with a new Samsung Note and said "I've just bought this for myself. Try it for one day before you pass judgement".

Six hours later, there was no way I was going to get that Note back! That Note 3 is still running as good as the day I bought it and I even suggested she upgrade it to a later model, but no, she is one very happy camper. Now that's cost effectiveness.

I've got a Note7 box - in pristine condition.
