I am tossing up whether to email their main office to complain, not about the salesperson, who was very helpful in all other aspects, but about that practice in general. I feel really sorry for people who spend much more than they need to.

E-mailing the head office will get you nowhere.

Who would be encouraging staff to sell anti-virus / warranties etc?

But aside from all of this, in todays market, if a retail business only sold phones they'd go broke.

It's the add-ons where they make their money.

I had a read on Norton website to see how they would pitch such a product.

It appears to only do two (totally redundant) things:

1. Find my phone feature

2. Device online backup

Both of which are already covered by iCloud. Hmm..

The guy said you could buy the product on the Apple website. The only Norton product I could find on there is Norton Small Business, which says "Security is custom-built for each device, so your Macs and PCs are protected from online threats and identity theft, while your iPhones and iPads are protected from loss and unwanted access to customer information. Remote Locate and Remote Wipe help you find or secure lost or stolen devices quickly." So basically, that product doesn't protect your iDevices from viruses either, it just does what Find My iPhone can do.

That makes me quite angry, actually.

I use to work in retail while studying and a lot of products have supplier related incentives on them e.g sell this product and we'll give you $10..

The sale people use this to subsidies their low salaries by pedaling stuff to customers they don't need as these incentives are A LOT more than the commission they are paid.

When I was working in retail extended warranties, AV and those really overpriced surge protectors always had big bonus's attached to them.. I'd day the sales person was just trying to get paid rather then be helpful.
