shaneblyth:
because Apple charges for the ipod touch update but not the iphone one for some reason only known to them

Accounting purposes apparently, the US version of IRD comes down on them or something if they give it away.  I dunno, seems daft.

yep I've been running it for an hour or so now.  PwnageTool took about 5 mins to compile the custom firmware and iTunes took another 5 to restore it to the iPhone (1st gen 8GB).  Works a treat, no functional issues so far.  MobileMe works well and is pushing mail to my handset.  Installed about 10 apps from the store and they work great as well.

All in all I'm very VERY happy with how it went.

1 slight annoyance:  When syncing in iTunes it seems to get stuck on contacts.  It syncs them, but doesn't go further.  The only other thing I've set to sync is Apps at this stage, so I had to de-check contacts syncing, apply, and then only sync the applications.  That worked, and I'll look into the issue later once I've had a play with the firmware.  Still, contacts syncing shouldn't matter now that I've got MobileMe working.  It also restored my backup successfully meaning I've got all my wallpapers, webapps and such on there as well.

Might have a play with Exchange push when I get to work tomorrow.

My phone is unlocking as I type this.

I had unlocked 1.1.4 using Ziphone.   It may be this that caused Pwnage to have difficulty with the bootloader on my phone.  It came up and said FAIL, however then directed me to a site to download a bootloader file (a small .bin file).   It has combined the two to a custom 2.0 firmware file, and as I type this, is updating my phone..

It may or maynot be, but if you have unlocked your phone with Ziphone, you may encounter this.

It has just completed the unlock and not going...

Will keep you posted..

All OK!

When you are asked if you are a "LEGIT" Iphone user, select NO.  I said yes the first time..

a quote from this blog http://www.geekzone.co.nz/iphone/5424

The 20MB download is currently available for Mac only.

Sucks I know but shouldn't be too long until a pc version is out,

Hey we are still 90% of the market

can't you put it in DFU mode and restore back to standard 2.0 firmware, then try again?

I'm discussing this over here now (don't want to cross-post).

but yes, I tried that several times, just get the same result: that scary "emergency slide" note down the bottom  and teh cord to itunes screen on the phone.

I had that yesterday.  When the Pwnage application asks if you are a "legit" iphone user, do you answer yes or no?  Answer "No" got me sorted..
