Have you changed Timezone from Cupertino, San Fransisco to a NZ City?

Did you buy it in NZ or overseas? Maybe it is a dud and you need to take it back and get a different one.

Is it the latest model?

Even after creating an appleID that you can sign into it still needs the email address verified. Have you done that?

Ummm, I is it looking for money, sometimes I have found it wants some $ in the tank to start, although I am sure this is not really required. A 20 itunes card to start it might work

It's not just looking for money, it wants OP to buy the latest and greatest iPad Pro and feed that thing money.

Right, spent hour on phone to APple, created new accounts, changed credit cards, used different devices, and still same error - so Id say somehting on Apples new signup system has failed and theyre not aware of it as such. Theyre raising my case to the engineers to investigate, but in meantime Im going to try an itunes account my wife uses for beta testing her company app and see if that works..... if that does, at least I can get the ATV running for now.

Visited a school for my son, saw that they were all snobbish and EVERY pupil had either a Macbook or an Ipad, and the school only has Macs.

Me and missus looked at each other, nodded, and away we went on our way.

What did they do to look snobbish, noting that you have already decided that

My 70+ parents have an, and love their, Apple TV.

As someone already pointed out, have you verified the account via the email you get?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I've thought about this some more and I'm pretty sure the answer was to use a different path to create the Apple ID without a payment method.

There was the official way and an official way which I found on a Google search and an ID without a CC.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific because I had the exact same issue.

I think this says more about you, than them?

Also what about all the iPhones & iPads you already own? hmm..

Its not a hardware issue, as I get errors on the account even via iTunes on PC and Apple Music on Android. Its running at the moment on the wifes account, so my folks can at least use the thing.

Created a completely fresh account and had the exact same issue, so looks like its a problem on Apples sign up system............

Are you able to upgrade one of the accounts that was made to Two Factor Authentication and see if that allows it to work?

So, to replay the thread:

1. You've created an AppleID for your dad

2. The ID isnt being accepted for use by any of your widgets?

Apple have come back and acknowledged there might be a glitch in the sign up system and getting engineering to look into it. So will leave it at that for now until they come back and say theyve found it.
