That seems to be a common theme. Same with me. Didn't help that I wasn't taught any financial literacy as a kid or wasn't allowed to get a job until I had left home, by which time my respect for money was non-existent.

Sure we can. We just would've waited one more month to buy it so we didn't run the risk of getting into trouble. Especially if we were living paycheck to paycheck.

But the op was supposed to have $300 left its apple who stuffed up.

The point is not that Apple stuffed up. The point is that OP put themselves in a position where a small stuff up could cause them a critical financial problem because they wanted an iPad *this month* rather than next month, or the month after. It was a self-inflicted and entirely unnecessary vulnerability.

Apple’s response was completely reasonable.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

But that is the point. Your deflecting the issue and blaming the OP calling it a "critical financial problem" which is a load of bollocks. OP calculated the Ipad purchase + keyboard knowing they would have $300 left over. Thats not a financial problem on the OPs half. Thats a screw up on apples part pure and simple and your trying to blame the OP.

Apple's response was a form of reasonable but not "completely" reasonable:

Apple did not take complete responsibility for their mistake.
Apple did not restore the situation to anything like what it would have been without the mistake.
Apple did not satisfy their customer.
Apple did not consider his plight worth assisting with.

My sympathy is with the OP who shouldn't have to suffer for a mistake that was made by someone else.

I have no sympathy for corporate lackeys hiding behind corporate rules at the expense of relatively powerless individuals: "The accounting rules and the approvals are just too hard to do if we try to help him get out of the hole that someone else created".

I buck the trend. I was always a bit of Scrooge but my ex-wife was total spend thrift who racked up credit card debt on unnecessary junk at a time when we were on one income. Actually was a big factor in the disintegration of the relationship.

I don't want to get into the debate about how people should manage their money, but to me five days seems like a long wait for a resolution to a blunder that involves a reasonably significant amount of money. I would have thought they would sort it within a couple of days.

Different situation but it's not always as easy as it seems. I've worked at different finance companies and it could be a nightmare tracing payments sometimes. In fact at one, we had a customer pay their via automatic payment for an additional three years. We had no way of contacting them and couldn't cancel the payment.

Or tracing manual payments. Someone would use an incorrect reference and not realised that there were thousands of payments coming in. I'm sure these days you can probably just sort by amount or something.

I couldn’t pay a credit card bill because of a bank error that resulted in my account being frozen.

They gave a Lawyer the wrong account, which when they moved it to correct account, left me with a uncleared cheque, causing a negative available balance.

Bank told me I had to wait 7 days for cheque to clear.

Keeping someone’s money when it’s a stuff up is not reasonable in my view.
It was to do with a house sale, so I knew who Lawyer was, after I let him know what happened and bank refusing to release my own money, call from him to bank, about 3 minutes later brunch manager on phone to me, 10 minutes later had access to my money, where before Lawyer involved bank thought it reasonable to make me wait 7 days.

Shouldn’t take 7 days to sort out, even if smaller amount.

Was it even a mistake by apple, or is it simply them doing a authorization for the money, and then doing a charge and a junk bank with poor processing not releasing the authorization when the charge when thru?

Have seen that with kiwibank and a friend who insists on having a card with them when using the eftpos at pump. They also have a low limit and live close to it so went over the limit when this happened.

Expect and ignore moral advice. People like to spread their wisdom even if not wanted.

With respect though, companies make mistakes and sometimes it takes a while to fix.

Happened to me 2 weeks ago, took the daughter to the orthodontist, paid on their mobile IOS credit card attachment device, but it got stuck on 'processing'. So , she rebooted the device, and I paid again.

Checked my cc statement later, and I'd been billed twice . She just said I'd get an account credit which will be used in future.

It can be very handy when the physical one gets flaky....

Although not applicable to the ipad, if you have an iphone 6s or newer, excluding the (iphone Xr and SE which don't have this feature), you can use 3D touch to exit back to the homescreen. You do this by first using 3D touch on the left side of the screen to activate the app switcher, and then tap outside the apps to go back to the home screen. I hardly ever need to touch the home button as a result, so reduces the risk of failure. IMO it is one of the downsides of the Xr and the SE for that matter, not having 3D touch to access some of these extra features. although the SE is a good affordable iphone, the Xr is priced similar to a flagship model, so IMO should have 3D touch.

Piety only gets you so far people - this person's asking for help, not judgement. A lot of contribution is just telling him, in a nicer form, "LOL U DID BAD DON'T BE DUMB NEXT TIME", which does diddly for this chap.

Regarding sussing out your card - you are very much up a specific creek without a paddle, and your best bet (as someone else already mentioned) is to reach out to your bank regarding an emergency extension of your credit, or a temporary overdraft of some sort.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.
