I decided to upgrade my old iPad with one of the new ones released last week... it was quite expensive but I decided I could afford it by maxing out my credit card, but I would still have $300 credit to last me through until my next pay day...

Wrong

Last night when I went to fill my car with fuel for the week, but my card was declined.

Checked online and Apple had charged me twice, seperately,  for the keyboard .. an extra $299..

So i called apple this morning.. and they said oops... we made a mistake, you should see your money back in 5 days...

I said, thats fine but I live 30km from my work, I wont have gas in my car after today... how do I get to work.. their only answer was to say sorry... and no they dont offer any  compensation.

They also refused to cancel my order and refund my total purchase.

Surely its fraud if you use someones credit card details to bill them for something that they didnt authorise?

Calling it fraud is a bit of a stretch. It is clearly a mistake and 5 days seems reasonable enough to fix it. You'll find that credit holds can sometimes take up to 7 days to drop off. So, as much as it sucks to be in this position, I don't think you've got much chance getting it resolved any quicker. Perhaps try calling the bank, explaining the situation, and asking for a temporary increase on the card maximum?

It's a mistake, but even if they cancelled it outright you would still need to wait a couple of days for the funds to come back to your card. Have you actually tried spending above your card limit? Most of the time it's not a hard cap and you'll be allowed over. Amex even has a tool to check how much above your limit they'll let you spend.

I really hate to be "that guy" especially as I am pretty rubbish with money myself, but if you could only "afford it" by maxing out your credit card and then still relying on said credit card to pay for critical expenses like fuel, then you couldn't really afford it...

This is from a place of bitter experience, not smugness, so I hope it doesn't come across as such.

Doesn't excuse Apple's screw up, but if you leave yourself that lean then you will get burned occasionally. Hope it doesn't hurt you too badly.

Cheers

I've experienced a similar issue with Apple before. If you escalate it hard enough, they will provide you with a credit to make you happy.

Your credit card provider will be really receptive to your situation, and they can offer a temporary limit increase. Just give them a call.

If the unlikely event they're not receptive or understanding and they DON'T want your business, I'd be switching CC providers.

Don't listen to all the silver tops in this thread who probably don't know what it's like to run a tight budget or live pay check to pay check. They can't remember what it was like to be young and find happiness in material objects.

Enjoy the new iPad!

Thanks for your considerate response, yeah I see the same old people always like to stick the knife in when people have a problem... didnt expect sympathy, but your advise is helpful.

Sure we can. We just would've waited one more month to buy it so we didn't run the risk of getting into trouble. Especially if we were living paycheck to paycheck.

Yip, this

Explain the situation, they will be able to see the transactions going out to apple, so you should be able to get a temp increase on your card limit...

I go with the "talk to your bank/Credit card provider" if that fails talk to family or even your employer for an advance on pay, but do not be tempted to cover the rest of your month with a Payday loan they are a recipe for grief.

Many 'silver tops' know exactly what its like. And they made damn sure they didn't have to live that way any more. They sure didn't go silver by bathing in imaginary money.

You had two people recommend you to talk to the bank about your limit before that comment. The advice to be careful about financial responsibility is still valid.

I do remember it well - I also remember how badly it screwed me by racking up and paying pointless CC debt for things I didn't really "need right now" - things that are now long gone or gathering dust!

As someone who still struggles every day with balancing want Vs need (often failing) and as someone who is starting to slowly get to grips with a more sustainable way of spending, it is not a case of wanting to "stick the knife in" but trying to share some experience which may one day help someone.

I hope OP does indeed enjoy their new purchase and that they don't have too much of a struggle getting to next payday after Apple shafted them - not their fault at all, though the situation itself could have been avoided.

The friendly warning and sharing of experience still stands - please be careful with easy credit/gratification, it is a slippery slope with nothing but turds at the bottom.

:)

Yup - as a fellow "Silver Top" or more accurately, "Skin Top", I also remember the days of living paycheck to paycheck and needlessly racking up debt for consumer goods that excited me on the day of purchase and less so as every day passed.

I wouldn't have been so rude or dismissive of the advice - I simply would have said thanks and moved on (and bought the device anyway, as it was my life and nobody else's.

My advice here would be not to ask for advice unless you're prepared for some home truths to be exposed...and to listen to the advice of those that have been there and done that and try not to emulate the mistakes they've made - they're not being wowsers or raining on your parade...they're providing the benefit of hindsight and past experience - all of which you've thrown in their faces because their view is contradictory to yours.

Actually, some of us learnt not to do this *by* doing this.

Indeed; we have only recently come off 10 years of being a single-income family and have spent the last three years dealing with all the stuff that was left to rot for the previous ten. New cars, new whitegoods, repairs to the house ... new iPads were not a priority. And they still aren't, which is why, although the home button on my current one is getting harder to press by the day, I still hope to get at least another three months out of it before I replace it, even though I could put it on a credit card today.

I still remember the days when I was single and living from paycheck to paycheck and struggling with the temptation to spend money I didn't have.

I am now in the situation I am today where I don't have to do that, and I owe it all to my wife, she's the one who pulled me out of that horrible financial habit.

It's not good, but it's so hard not to be after the next shiny toy as soon as it's released.

I now make my shiny toys last much longer and look after them better than I used to.

I still want lots, but after thinking about the things I see I make a better judgement of balancing the want vs need.
I still fail from time to time, but I'm human (and part magpie).

Don't take the criticism in a negative way, think of it as advice, most of us have been in your situation and do understand the predicament, but we really do wish to help.
