Anybody having trouble setting up Apple Pay on the Apple Watch? My ASB Visa Debit has been successfully added on my iPhone but it says 'invalid card' when I try to add it on my Apple Watch.

I had an issue on both my ASB card and my UK HSBC card when setting up on the watch.

For me I had to ensure:

  1. I had received and validated both of the texts sent when registering - once for the Wallet on the phone and again for the card on the watch
  2. I had to reboot both phone and watch after setting up and validating the card on my phone
  3. My phone had to be connected to WiFi when pushing the card to my watch. For some reason it always refused to do it on cellular data only!

Worked fine after the above.

Cheers

After updating both iOS and watchOS, retried the process for my watch and didn't work.

I ended up having to register my Visa Debit as a new card on my watch and that seems to have done the trick.

Really excited to try this out next time I'm out grocery shopping.

Well this was great news and very easy to setup.

However, does anybody else have the option for double click to launch it greyed out?  I'm think this is probably policy from my work, as I have Airwatch (or whatever it's now called) installed for work email/calendars etc.

Saw the message when I woke up this morning; added all my cards; iPhone Xs Max and it is all working well. It's good that ASB stopped fighting the inevitable and embraced Apple Pay.

Though would it not have been better for Apple to allow ASB to use their own app, like you can on Android. Why should ASB be held ransom to Apple's demands?

One could equally ask why does ASB insist on being the most special of special snowflakes by insisting on having a bespoke solution. When I see businesses insisting on an in house bespoke solution it sounds more like job security through obscurity rather than it being the best for the consumer.

Just added ASB Apple pay to my phone without any issues. Will be interesting what happens if I want to quickly pay for something, is it going to use my ASB or ANZ?

Because there's no way Apple would (or should) give anyone access to the secure elements of the iPhone, which are used for Apple Pay.

I hope Wespac is seeing the hate being pushed in their direction.

I'm seriously tempted to shift banks just to get this option, but it's a huge inconvenience.

I'm really worried for Kiwibank if they are trying to figure out their own system, many others have tried and failed, some spectacularly so.

Come on Westpac, get with the rest of the world and stop being a bunch of penny pinchers and just admit someone else has a better system than you and accept the tiny profit loss so customers can have something they want. It is our money after all.

Yea, I'm bitter about it.

It's also your phone, and I think it's wrong to need Apple's blessing to do virtually anything with it.

Their Android pay solution is actually a lot more elegant than the ASB NFC option - visually a nicer application that his simpler and light weight but I could imagine Westpac eventually coming to Apple Pay but keeping with their own in-house Android solution.
