Well, it appears that hell has frozen over:

https://www.commbank.com.au/support.digital-banking.commbank-and-apple-pay.html

Which makes me wonder when or if ASB will follow suit and it'll be bought to New Zealand or whether there will be a sizeable delay.

Fingers crossed ASB will finally get their A into G and join ANZ & BNZ in supporting it.

I wonder how close the two banks (Commonwealth & ASB) are in terms of policy and tech.

I hope so but then again I'm not hopefully given that NAB in Australia owns BNZ yet doesn't support Apple Pay, when Apple Pay came to ANZ it was around 3-6 months after the Australia launch etc. There is a rumour that Kiwibank is looking at their own pay solution so that is always an opportunity for it to happen but alas like usual it appears that businesses drag their feet.

Woohoo!

"Apple has managed to persuade Commbank and its New Zealand subsidiary ASB to join its digital payments scheme that utilises iPhones, iPads, the Watch wearable and the Safari web browser.

ASB executive general manager of digital data and brand, Simon Tong, said the bank decided to join Apple Pay now to give customers the most options for simple and easy payments, along with existing offerings.

"We've been listening to customer feedback and decided the timing just before Christmas and summer holidays is right for ASB to introduce Apple Pay to our customers" Tong said.

Does this mean ASB could be launching before even Commonwealth?

Just received:

ASB Bank today brings its customers Apple Pay, which is transforming mobile payments with an easy, secure, fast and private way to pay.

Apple Pay is the latest addition to ASB’s suite of virtual payment options, making it simple and easy for customers to pay in a way that is most convenient to them.

Security and privacy is at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, or on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device. Each transaction is authorised with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

Simon Tong, ASB executive general manager digital, data and brand says the introduction of Apple Pay will give more than 500,000 ASB customers access to the innovative payments platform.

“We’re pleased to bring Apple Pay to ASB customers, offering them the ultimate in convenience and security," he said.

Apple Pay is easy to set up and users will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by credit and debit cards. In stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and later, and Apple Watch.

Online shopping in apps and on websites accepting Apple Pay is simple with Touch ID, or just double-click the side button and authenticate with a glance with Face ID. There’s no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information with Apple Pay. When paying for goods and services in apps or Safari, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6 and later, iPhone SE, iPad Pro, iPad (5th Generation and later), iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 and later. You can also use Apple Pay in Safari on any Mac introduced in or after 2012 running macOS Sierra and confirm the payment with iPhone 6 or later or Apple Watch, or with Touch ID on the new MacBook Pro.

I open my ASB app this morning to check my balance and it popped up straight away with the announcement and the option to go straight to setting up Apple Pay on my devices...

Done!

Anybody having trouble setting up Apple Pay on the Apple Watch? My ASB Visa Debit has been successfully added on my iPhone but it says 'invalid card' when I try to add it on my Apple Watch.

I had an issue on both my ASB card and my UK HSBC card when setting up on the watch.

For me I had to ensure:

  1. I had received and validated both of the texts sent when registering - once for the Wallet on the phone and again for the card on the watch
  2. I had to reboot both phone and watch after setting up and validating the card on my phone
  3. My phone had to be connected to WiFi when pushing the card to my watch. For some reason it always refused to do it on cellular data only!

Worked fine after the above.

Cheers

This is good, but it's disappointing Westpac is such a hold-out.

I had no problem setting up my visa debit card. I did wait a while after settling up my iPhone before enabling the card on my watch.
