scho047: sorry for asking stupid question.....
ive been reading up on this topic of apn issue....
does this only apply to prepaid sim cards???

i am currently on simcard that has always been on plan... you choose one from the beginning..and can access internet from my current phone.. which is not an iphone by the way....so when i do get the phone outright...as i hope to tale it oversseas with me when i travel and use the local sims there....
so can i just buy the iphone outright... use this patch to get the apn setting done.. and pop in my sim (plan one) and should work fine with calls, text, data at a casual rate n wifi ????

If you want to use data here with your You Choose plan then you could use unlockit.co.nz to enable data (set a different APN).

Overseas, with a foreign SIM card in the phone, the APN settings should become visible and you won't need to use unlockit.co.nz to set the APN.

Yea

It maybe (a NZ thing only or maybe a bug or maybe "how things work" that under GRPS(not 3G) (Gen1) that the APN is ignored unless you set it to www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz (which it will not connect)

right... that makes it a wee bit more understandable....

so without using www.unlockit.co.nz on iphone with my you choose SIM... i wont be able to use data unles its via wifi..

but when i do use it alter apn.... then i can use it as per $1 for 10mb casual rate?

Some other Carriers lock the APN.. 1 carrier in AU does.. 1 carrier in AU doesn't for example as far as I can tell .. :-)

Yes as far as I know..

Unless vodafone block data from Iphones not on iphone specific plans

How do you switch between profiles?. I downloaded all 3 profiles and it shows that I have 3 profiles available but how do I
switch between them?

You can't. the best is to only have the www.vodafone.net.nz profile only in your email on your phone and apply it when you want to do data and remove it when you want to stop again.

Made some progress thanks but still have issues

I have gen2 3g iPhone

Pofile APN vodafone.net.nz ... - access internet and data usage increases

Profile APN Fake ... - access internet and data usage increases

If I delete a profile and not install another one I get failure and cannot connect to internet but data usage still increases..

Help! How can I totally prevent data usage when I don't want to?

Hmm.. Data should not work with 3G with the FakeAPN.. mayeb you are using GRPS (not a 3G area).

I tried last night and a FakeAPN with 3G would not connect (on a differen phone). but GRPS would (unless vodafone have chnaged it)

delete all profiles so it tries to use the standard www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz instead

sees that data will work with ANY APN name (On GRPS) except for www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz at the moment.. I'm sure it didn't work like this in the past until they introduced the new iphone APN.

With 3G a fake APN will actually fail. (It did last night)

Not as expected.. (unless you are in a GRPS area only?)

can you download the fakeAPN again and see if you can access data (on 3G)?

I don't think on vodafone's end at all it will be charged.. just the phone thinks so.. as it needs a little bit of data to actually try and connect (they should charge you for this I don't personally think)

At home, no 3g only gprs, at work I can get 3g

with all profiles deleted does that insert www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz ? or where do you get that profile?

Am At work at the moment.. but when I logged into unlockit.co.nz I only saw 1 FAKE APN
what is the difference between fake1 fake2 and fake 3?

fake.mobileconfig, fake2.mobileconfig are slightly different formatting..

if you delete all the profiles it will use the default iphone APN which you shouldn't be able to do data on.

the FakeAPN is normally used for people overseas who the iphones on different Carriers use the normal dataplan.

Seems FakeAPN not work with GPRS. so the best is to delete all profiles and if you don't have an Iphone specific plan Data will not work.

Yes it will use the default Iphone APN with no profiles

this brings up another question..

If you have a 3G iPhone talking on GRPS only and you ARE on an iPhone Dataplan.. how do you disable data completely ?? (or will www.vodafone.net.nz APN not work?)

Can anyone try this who has an iPhone Dataplan (turn off 3G on the iPhone and add the FakeAPN and the www.vodafone.net.nz and see if they work?)
