Just a few stats from my website..

www.unlockit.co.nz (iPhone APN Changer)

After a week I have had around 11,000 unique visitors to the website with around 15,000 page views.
I've had 5 donations.. and I'm only 2% on the way to buying an iPhone.. Another 98% to go :-)

Thanks for the help from a few people..

Craig...

You might want to warn people on your site that the 'disable data' profile will enable data if you're using an iPhone with prepay. Probably less of a problem from tomorrow with $1 for the first 10 MB finally coming in but still, nice not to be spending money without realising it.

The very first page does state that it may be costly to perform the change.

This website will change the APN on your 3G iPhone. This can be used to enable data without having to buy a specific iPhone Data Plan.

Note: Prepay/Casual data plans are expensive

Maybe I'm not being clear. The option to disable data causes it to be enabled on a prepay iPhone. It says underneath the disable data option "APN set to invalid setting (disables data)". My point is that it does not disable data, not that it costs a lot.

I assume it does disable data for people on iPhone plans with the proper iPhone APN on their accounts. Maybe someone could confirm?

It doesn't "enable" data for Prepay when you disable data. It simply fill in an invalid APN number so any connection attempt - on account or prepay - will fail.

There are 3 Options..

1 - Enable Data (set to www.vodafone.net.nz)
2 - Set Custom (sets it to what you type in)
3 - Disable (Fake APN) (sets to invalid APN so data will not work)

Thanks

That's what I also expected, and yet, in testing it on an actual device on a prepay plan, that's not what happens.

With no profile installed (so APN is the default www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz or whatever it is), data doesn't work and it gives an error trying to load a page. With the fake APN profile installed data does work.

It's pretty easy to test:
Install the fake APN profile
Disable wifi (seeing as it'll be used by default if available)
Browse to any page in Safari
Check the data counter in Settings -> General > Usage (it should be 0 sent/0 received on prepay)
If you want, also check your prepay balance, though it seems a bit irrelevant at that point...

I could post some screenshots if it'd help?

Strange.. Data shouldn't work with the FakeAPN installed as it installs an APN which is called "fake.notvalid" with a random username/password.

Are you sure you don't have any other profile loaded and you are using a NZ vodafone prepaid sim?

If you turn off data roaming does it work still?

I've had lots of ppl use it (mostly overseas) and they say it works and others have tried it.

You can actually look at new webpages (and wifi is off?)

Thanks

Can someone else try this as well?

Yep, using Vodafone NZ prepay. I had the same SIM on contract, but cancelled my contract about a week ago, in case that's at all relevant.

I do have one other profile installed, but it's a provisioning profile (for running signed code for development), not a configuration profile.

Sorry for the links, but I think some images would probably help illustrate it best. Hope this is OK? I created these just a few minutes ago.

Profile installed [1] [2]
And, trying to load a page without the 'Fake APN' profile installed

I thought it best to double check to make sure I wasn't imagining things.

Oh, and data roaming is off. As far as I'm aware that's the default (don't think I've changed it).

http://www.unlockit.co.nz/fake2.mobileconfig

and

http://www.unlockit.co.nz/fake3.mobileconfig

also you say the data goes up.. but you can still actually view webapages? using the Standard Fake APN?

Thanks

Yes, sorry, I should've said - to test it I'm just loading a web page while the wifi is disabled (though if I forget to re-enable wifi usage continues to go up from email checking and so on).

I can still access pages with fake2 installed, but get the PDP auth failure with fake3.

strange..

fake, fake2 have an invalid APN but have a fake username/password in them.

but fake3 has an invalid APN.. but has no username/password specified (so they are blank)

jut tested on another phone  (non iPhone - Using jasjam where I can turn 3G on/off)

3G (www.vodafone.net.nz data works)
3G (www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz data not work)
3G (FakeAPN) data not work)

GRPS (www.vodafone.net.nz works)
GRPS (www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz not work)
GPRS (FakeAPN still allows data)..

strange..

So seems vodafone allow any APN under GRPS apart from www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz)!

can anyone verify this.

So the FakeAPN works fine.. except if you have a Gen1 Iphone and in NZ.. If you don't want data then don't put any profile at the moment. (so it will try and use www.iphone.vodafone.net.nz)

Thanks

reading what you said....

seem that on the iphone GRPS data will work with fake2 and not fake3 (same APN in both but fake2 has an invalid username/password)

Right?

Thanks

sorry for asking stupid question.....
ive been reading up on this topic of apn issue....
does this only apply to prepaid sim cards???

i am currently on simcard that has always been on plan... you choose one from the beginning..and can access internet from my current phone.. which is not an iphone by the way....so when i do get the phone outright...as i hope to tale it oversseas with me when i travel and use the local sims there....
so can i just buy the iphone outright... use this patch to get the apn setting done.. and pop in my sim (plan one) and should work fine with calls, text, data at a casual rate n wifi ????

sorry for asking this again... am rather confused thats all...

cheers

Weird. Just wanted to let you know so you could warn people the fake apn might not work as expect if they're on prepay. It's not like prepay users normally need to disable data using a profile, but if they were experimenting with the fake apn profile it could be unfortunate.
