I was considering one, but the flex issue IMO isn't good for something in this price range. So will probably wait for the next gen which will no doubt fix it.

There is no flex issue. Am speaking for 99.99% of users.

It is bizarre that it has that issue.  Hopefully they will also improve iOS for the pro models, so it is truly a desktop replacement device, but it is very difficult to do. They really should have done something similar to Microsoft did with windows, but perhaps in reverse, so that future mac OS computers are derived from ios.  That way they could avoid all the old  legacy code bloat.

Not sure what you mean by flex. The 2018 iPad Pro doesn’t ‘flex’ in the sense of bending. Apple have acknowledged that a small percentage of devices may have a variation from perfectly linear along one side but this is within their tolerances and is not regarded as a fault. The variation is a fraction of a millimetre and the device is perfectly rigid. The variation may arise from the thermal bonding of aluminium and plastic chassis components during manufacture.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

i was also worried about this, i dont want to speed all this money on a bend iPad, no matter how small it is. And if its a small percentage then replace them. People are paying top $$$ for this!

Yeah I have to admit, if mine was one with the variation, I wouldn’t be very happy.

Long term I would quite like to consider replacing my laptop with an iPad Pro. My needs are really quite basic but there are some funny little things that I think could be awkward to manage on an iPad. Examples like:

  • Downloading a CSV/OFX file from my internet banking and uploading it into my cloud based budgeting software.

  • Accessing old photo archives that sit in MacOS Photos libraries that are not linked to my iCloud account.

I'm sure there are solutions to these sorts of things, but I'd need to really quantify all of my requirements and do some research.

The other major advantage of MacOS over iOS is the ability to do temporal backups via Time Machine. If something craps out on my Mac I just restore it to a particular point in time, whereas I think with iOS backups you have to restore the whole system as at the last time a backup was run.

You’re right - as is @WolfChop. Although I said above that I use my iPad for everything, I guess that’s not strictly correct. There are some things where a mouse is very much easier to use than a fat finger. Eg. Creating or editing spreadsheets on an iPad is not easy IMO - so to do that I revert to MBP. Same for filling in long online forms. However once the doc has been created, it’s visible on the iPad via Files and small fine-tuning edits there are OK.

Although iOS 12 has reduced the truth in the old line “iPads are for consumption, not for creation” - it’s still basically true and will stay that way until Apple give mouse functionality to iOS.

I’m no longer working so the mix of what I do on the iPad is very different to a working person. I can’t imagine doing full-time daily desk computing work on an iPad - no matter how much Apple is now trying to push this line.

It appears that the ‘gap’ that we were alluding to above between MBP and iPad, for work like creating and editing spreadsheets, is going to be narrowed. Strong rumours that iOS 13 is going to give mouse functionality to iPad Pro. This will be marketed as an ‘accessibility option’ rather than a full-blown feature - to get around the fact that Steve Jobs once said something like “if you need a mouse with a tablet you’ve failed”.

It’s also rumoured that many iOS apps will be able to be used on Mac (and maybe vice versa) - further narrowing the gap.

A 12.9” iPad Pro with a keyboard folio cover and a Magic Mouse would be very similar to a MacBook Air - albeit with no trackpad.

I just bought my 11/64 a couple days ago. I don't usually buy the smallest storage one but the price tag is too hefty for a bigger one. It should be ok though. I took it out of the box in the shop and checked it for flat before purchasing. :) I got a Dux plus case for it which was handily on sale (Elive has them for about 30% off). I use a case for all my portable stuff. This case also adds some rigidity with a hard plastic back. I'm ok without a keyboard because I use a PC for anything needing much typing but if I decide I need one I'll go Bluetooth.

This 11 inch replaces a 4th gen iPad that came out in 2012 and I bought it as soon as they became available in NZ, so it has done its dash. I am mostly replacing it because it can't run an app I need (opens it, can't run it). But also the home button only works intermittently so I've been using the onscreen accesability one which is a pain. The case has disintegrated. Even so my 4th gen is soldiering on very well and I am using it right now, lol, because it was closest. I am trying to decide what to do with it as it still works fine for email, browsing, messenger etc.

Best features so far of the new one are face ID, lack of home button and speakers. I also like the bigger screen size. I don't usually use ear phones or Bluetooth speakers so the speaker upgrade is nice. A pain is going to be going on a trip and having two adapters and cables to take, one for my iPhone SE.

No way could I use an iPad for everything. Everything work related is still done on a pc. It's literally impossible to do some things I do at work and home on an iPad. I was hoping the Surface Pro 4 could be a do it all machine but it lacks in the tablet department. So I still have both. I suspect as a household we are always going to need one pc.

I’ve just placed an order for a 12.9” with 256 GB and keyboard cover. I’ve got my fingers crossed that Apple add mouse and trackpad support with iOS 13. If so I’d be able to plug the iPad Pro into an external large screen and replace my old laptop.

Way to go! Yeah!

It looks like you’ll be fine:

Not quite so cool though if mouse requires USB-C rather than Bluetooth. Surely they’d enable their Magic Mouse.

... although you would be able to get a pretty decent laptop for what this set-up will cost you.

Yes seems that mouse USB support will come first. Perhaps a toe in the water approach. This won’t be too bad I’ll use a new USB-C monitor that will display screen output and charge ihe iPad and can plug a USB mouse into a spare port on the monitor.

Sounds a bit 1980’s though, doesn’t it. Surely not. Who wants to go back to using a wired mouse? I don’t even own one these days.

Yes not ideal. It would make way more sense to enable trackpad support with all the cool gestures. I was thinking a USB mouse like a Logitech one with a dongle might work so no wires?

Might be cool if they enabled the iPhone screen to be a trackpad for iPad. 😃

I’m interested to know what sort of stuff you use the pencil for.
