Just bought one of this to upgrade from my 2018 standard iPad, Who else has bought one and what are your thought on it ??

So for for me its great, love the extra screen space and display is really nice and crisp.

I’ll be upgrading to the 12.9 version soon, using it as a laptop replacement. I had a play in a shop, love that full screen display and the smaller bezels.

I recently bought one from Spark Store and it's amazing. Paid $2249 for the 256gb version in 12.9 inch.

Ordered case on Apple website and awaiting deliver. Got the pencil delivered pretty fast.

Yeah I just got the 64gb 12.9 version, did not need the larger as my macbook pro will take the load of any larger files.

I replaced my 2013-vintage iPad Air with the 11” at Christmas. I love it! I got the keyboard folio for use at work with email and staking notes, and the normal folio for home use where I don’t need to type as much.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

Got the 11” purely for work and I love it!

Notability is my most used app and it’s been awesome to be paperless. OCR on handwriting is excellent.

My only complaint has been with the official apple folio case. It’s pretty flimsy and hard to actually stay in place if it’s anywhere but a solid surface.

The only other use would be scrolling in lieu of your finger..probably not worth $200! It also gets in the way if you’re in landscape mode on an angle

I brought the 12.9 on release to replace my previous 12.9. The overall size difference with the loss of the home button and bezels makes it a much easier device to handle and of course the screen is fantastic. I tried a pencil back when I had a 9.7" Pro but found I just didn't use it.

Bought the new 256GB 11” on day one to replace my 4-yo ‘day one’ 9.7” Air 2.

Expensive - but I just love this machine. The 2018 Pro, allied with iOS 12, is magic and now everything I have on any one device - MacBook Pro, iPad Pro or iPhone X - is available on all of them - Files, photos etc. If my phone rings but is across the other side of the room, I take the call on the iPad.

I live on my iPad and use it for pretty much everything - all the usual email internet and messaging stuff, streaming music for Sonos, banking, listening to the radio, household records and admin, storing and managing photos in conjunction with iCloud, storing downloaded Netflix content for use on frequent flying. I easily average six (maybe eight) hours per day, and it’s not hard to justify the expense when you use something so beautifully made and so useful, so often - and if you appreciate it every time you use it.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

It depends on what you mean by 'or anything' - if that mean you're not interested in using the iPad for note-taking and similar uses as well as art/drawing/design apps then it may not be worth getting a Pencil. But I'd also recommend you try a Pencil out in a shop using a decent note-taking app before making a final decision on whether a Pencil is for you.

I've got a first-gen Pencil for my standard (ie non-Pro) iPad, and believe it was totally worth buying (mine was s/h but unused for $75).

I'm using an app called MyScript Nebo for note-taking - the character recognition is excellent, plus it's decent at converting 'hand-written' diagrams, flow-charts etc.

Document mark-up apps also work really well with the Pencil; even the ability to easily complete and sign a (non-fillable) PDF form is pretty useful.

And some of the art-related apps are fantastic fun - eg Pigment is what a colouring app should be, and is pretty addictive.

I'm always jealous when people say they are able to complete all their work on an iPad.

I've tried for years to use the iPad as my main computing device and I just can't seem to stick with it.

I don't have any demanding tasks. Basically just web browsing, email, YouTube/Twitch streaming, music, movies, word documents, PDFs.

But it seems as though I'm just more comfortable with a desktop experience. I like having multiple windows/tabs/instances open at once. I want to simply drag and drop files everywhere. I have a bunch of movies on my external hard drive that I can't use with an iPad. Having access to a desktop browser makes me feel comfortable that all websites will be compatible and look right.

I'd prefer a MacBook but the prices, lack of ports, cost of repair and the keyboard issues give me pause.

I feel like the iPad Pro is a phenomenal piece of hardware but you're going to have to learn the limitations of iOS and/or have workarounds for things to get the most out of the device.

I want to give Apple my money but I'm not satisfied with their current Mac or iPad line. First world problems, I guess.

I was considering one, but the flex issue IMO isn't good for something in this price range. So will probably wait for the next gen which will no doubt fix it. It is bizarre that it has that issue. Hopefully they will also improve iOS for the pro models, so it is truly a desktop replacement device, but it is very difficult to do. They really should have done something similar to Microsoft did with windows, but perhaps in reverse, so that future mac OS computers are derived from ios. That way they could avoid all the old legacy code bloat.

Long term I would quite like to consider replacing my laptop with an iPad Pro. My needs are really quite basic but there are some funny little things that I think could be awkward to manage on an iPad. Examples like:

Downloading a CSV/OFX file from my internet banking and uploading it into my cloud based budgeting software.
Accessing old photo archives that sit in MacOS Photos libraries that are not linked to my iCloud account.

I'm sure there are solutions to these sorts of things, but I'd need to really quantify all of my requirements and do some research.

The other major advantage of MacOS over iOS is the ability to do temporal backups via Time Machine. If something craps out on my Mac I just restore it to a particular point in time, whereas I think with iOS backups you have to restore the whole system as at the last time a backup was run.

You’re right - as is @WolfChop. Although I said above that I use my iPad for everything, I guess that’s not strictly correct. There are some things where a mouse is very much easier to use than a fat finger. Eg. Creating or editing spreadsheets on an iPad is not easy IMO - so to do that I revert to MBP. Same for filling in long online forms. However once the doc has been created, it’s visible on the iPad via Files and small fine-tuning edits there are OK.

Although iOS 12 has reduced the truth in the old line “iPads are for consumption, not for creation” - it’s still basically true and will stay that way until Apple give mouse functionality to iOS.

I’m no longer working so the mix of what I do on the iPad is very different to a working person. I can’t imagine doing full-time daily desk computing work on an iPad - no matter how much Apple is now trying to push this line.

Apart from dark mode, ios 13 is supposed to give a major overhaul to the ipad. At the moment it just isn't that intuaive, and there is no reaosn why the icons on the homescreen are like they are, all spread out etc.
