Is this what you were after?

https://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/mobile-web.jsp

This was loaded early hours of this morning about 3am
No. I had looked at that. I found the link on http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/3g-broadband-plans.jsp very carefully styled to look like all the other text on the page instead of a link.

What I'm looking for is something like the fine print bits on the 3G broadband page that says:
  • Billing increments on monthly plans is in 10KB blocks, with a minimum 10KB charge
  • On the casual daily rate, if you use less than $1 worth in a day, well only charge for what you used
I can't find anywhere on the site that says what size blocks you'll be charged in on the casual plan (seeing as the 10 KB block bit specifically says monthly plans), and I can't find what rate you'll be charged at if you use less than $1 worth, even though it says "we'll only charge for what you used" (at least, I assume it's meant to say "we'll" instead of "well").

sbiddle: There is no mention anywhere on the VF site that I can see regarding the $5 per MB initial charge, just this

If you use less than $1 worth of data in a day, we’ll only charge for what you used.

I might be retarded... but I can't find that on that page...

But also it doesn't make it clear what less than $1 of data is.... I would assume $1 is 1MB... so I shouldn't be charged $1 until I hit 1MB?

Less than $1 of data could be <1KB?

It's in the "how to get it" tab.

You will pay $5 per MB until you hit $1 but this isn't listed. We know this but it's obviously a piece of vital info that should be on the site somewhere but isn't.

Hi guys,

I am not following this.... i assume that this is $1 per day for up to 10mb of data right?
but then what is the whole debate about it getting charged at $5 per MB until $1 is reached?
from what i read... to get 10Mb of data at $5/MB rate... it gives you $50!!!.....

can someone please explain to me who is obviously a dumb ass... ha...

thanks...

You get charged at $5 per MB, capped at $1, until you reach 10 MB.

Therefore, for your first 0.1 MB, you get charged 50 cents ($5 * 0.1).

At 0.2 MB, you reach $1 of usage, so it caps at that until you get to 10 MB.

That's exactly how it is. If you use up to 10 MB you pay only $1. If you use more than 10 MB then you pay $1 for each extra MB.

Here is a tip to save money. Use the optimised APN.

The "Optimised" traffic is compressed. Compression will depend on the content, text being more "squeezable" than pictures. But you get more for your buck.

I wonder how that will effect the opt.vodafone.net.nz will have on the google maps app. That thing seems to hose through the data (well kind of more than I was expecting). I'm going to try it out now.

What I want to know is confirmation that you get charged at $5/MB until you use $1. I know there was that guy posting on the Geekzone forums, and I'm sure it's correct. But doesn't anyone think that Vodafone should actually say it on their website? The only logical conclusion that you can come to with the information on the Vodafone website is that you should be charged at $1/MB (since this is the only per MB rate that is given on the site).

Here's the conspiracy theory... They have recently introduced the $1/customer support call and then they make it sound like you pay $1/MB for the first MB of data. So VF will be able to charge every prepay user $1 for the first 200KB of data and then another $1 when they call up customer support and ask why they weren't charged 20c instead of $1.

BTW that last paragraph isn't serious.

Yeah... $1 for 10MB wasn't in question... just how they calculate the first $1. This does seem to be calculated at ~$5/MB.

So if you use:

100KB you get charged 50c
200KB for $1
5MB for $1
10MB for $1

I still maintain that VF makes it seems like you get the first $1 charged at $1/MB so it would be:

100KB for 10c
200KB for 20c
1MB for $1
etc.

As for what you can do with 10MB... probably just check your email all day and look at a few websites, locate yourself in google maps etc.

It's not a lot.... but it gives you basic and a good emergency data quota. Not exactly using an iPhone to the full.

But I'm going to be glad that it's there and I can look on a map when I'm trying to find something in the car.

BTW I'm starting to appreciate how annoying it is to surf on GPRS... dial up is back. Use the opt.vodafone.net.nz APN... it might help and I couldn't see any lossy compression that they might be using... I don't know if it helped but it didn't seem to hurt. So that is what I'm using.

I'm on prepay. I actually text way more than I could talk. It's just more convenient most times.
