Is there anyone using the new casual data plan today?

I just applied the profile and tried a few things. After not being able to get data from one location I'm doing fine now at work (kind of pointless since I have wifi here).

I've managed to fly through 500KB just trying out google maps. Nice to be able to bring up a map though when I need it. Probably use that feature over summer now that we don't have to pay $5 just to locate yourself on a map.

One thing is....

I though we were going to be charged $1/MB for the first MB, and then a flat fee until $10. I've been charge $10 after using less than a MB. Shouldn't it be 50c for 500KB? I'm just going to have to turn it off if VF are going to charge me $1 for 1KB of data.

I'm hoping it is just the way that it's implemented. Perhaps it take $1 and then at the end of the day refunds you for what you didn't use. Otherwise I'm just not going to be giving Vodafone as much of my money (because I'll have to turn it off).

They already fleeced me of a 10c per time when my iPhone started downloading 1-2 bytes every hour (though this could be apples problem). Plus it might be nice for apple to include complete control of the data networks available. Why can't I just turn data off in the prefs? Did they really expect every country would have unlimited data? Maybe they did.

It's meant to be $1 for the first 10 MB, and $1 per 1 MB thereafter.

Edit: I guess I should point out I've used about 1.6 MB today (202 KB sent, 1.4 MB received) and been charged exactly $1 as expected.

Yeah... I don't know who it was from VF that was on the forums but they described it in detail and definitely made it sound like it would be charged at 1/MB up to $1 and then flat from there on.

It is really unfair that if you are not using data and your phone accidentally uses a byte of data (as has happened before) one day that you would get charged $1.

Yeah, looking at their site I see no mention of charging per 10 KB block (like they do for their contract data plans), so I suspect by omitting that they are implying that you pay a whole dollar each time you go into a new block (so download 10 KB and it's $1, and then go to 10.1 MB and it's $2, and 11.1 MB and it's $3, and so on).

Admittedly, I'm just taking a guess, if someone has a more clear definition from Vodafone then I'd be interested to see it.

Incidentally, for people who haven't noticed, it appears they attempt to send you an SMS at 8 MB and at 10 MB (but you can't view your usage unless you are "On Account").

Data is charged at $5 per MB up until $1 - this has been mentioned numerous times by Paul Brislen when the $1 per day was launched.

Vodafone's billing system automatically rounds all packet sessions up to the nearest 10kb so if you checked your email once per day for example and only used 5kb you will be billed for 10kb @ $5 per MB which will cost you 5c.

That is nice... but it didn't... maybe I just missed checking it quick enough but I'm pretty sure I was charged $1 straight off?

Have you used more than 200kb of data?

I have now.

I'll have to wait for tomorrow to test how quickly it charges me.

I wasn't around here when the $1 rate was announced, so I haven't seen any of what Paul said at the time. It'd be nice if the Vodafone site was updated to actually provide such details. I looked, including the online help, and couldn't find anything about the rate it was charged at.

I'll test it out tomorrow too, if I remember. I assume it works as he advised.

I couldn't find where it says what happens if you use less than 200KB of data.

There is no mention anywhere on the VF site that I can see regarding the $5 per MB initial charge, just this

If you use less than $1 worth of data in a day, we’ll only charge for what you used.

I might be retarded... but I can't find that on that page...

But also it doesn't make it clear what less than $1 of data is.... I would assume $1 is 1MB... so I shouldn't be charged $1 until I hit 1MB?

Less than $1 of data could be <1KB?

the new casual rate is great been on it most of the day, on IRC, MSN and ActiveSync to work - and still only on about 2.5 mb without going to web pages, and by being cabled to activesync, 10 mb is a pretty good size.....now if only vf would up their mobile dataplans to something similar...........

I'm extremely relieved it has kicked in, I forgot to swap sims today and accidentally burned through a pile of data, I'm rather glad now it only cost $1 instead of $80!!!!!
