Bung:

From Reddit
"The current theory is that it has to do with moisture buildup inside the ear cups causing a grounding/short somewhere in the ANC circuit which somehow causes microphone feedback."

The repair shop probably just left them on the bench so there wouldn't be the same humidity build up you'd get wearing them.

That's precisely the issue, and is what I passed on to both Sony corporate and Infinet (the repair agent) several times. I said they would need to be wearing them for at least an hour before the issue arises, which I'm guessing people in a repair centre don't really have time to do.

If I don't have any joy with the retailer then I guess I'll have my first CGA/disputes tribunal experience but I'm hoping to get it resolved before then.

Bung: Shame that Airheads didn't pass the focus group :-)

At $999 a pair, I'm thinking Airheads is what we'll probably call people who buy these (myself included).

These things look and are priced silly.

I think they look good and if they'd been $800 then I would seriously consider them.

The funny thing is that they actually probably would have been $800 if there had been a fair translation from the $USD price. It's almost as if they've priced themselves out of the market here - maybe they have limited supplies and want to supply the US market first?

$NZ999 ???? I didn't realise that Tim Cook had such a keen sense of humour or is this a 2020 piss take?

I don't see anything wrong with spending $1000 on a pair of headphones if you are a serious audiophile.

The problem is that this is a product made by a computer company with limited history in audio, and its sonic performance is bottlenecked by the fact that it uses bluetooth.

I don't think they will sell many, but it may be that this is intended to be a halo product to raise interest in upcoming Apple products that may be similar but cheaper.

Benjip:

Very pleased to see they use Lightning too rather than USB-C, so an easy fit with most of the Apple ecosystem.

Respectfully, their continued thumbing their nose at a world-wide standard like USB-C is appalling.

Edit:

You're aware of the infamous $1000 (USD) monitor stand eh?

For around this price the LCD-2 is a great headphone. Not as portable, not wireless, not closed, but awesome. $1000 for this seems a bit ridiculous.

Bung: Why are they even called Airpods when they are phones?

Its more Koolaider, and yes I like and use Apple.

As a colleague said today its a rip off plain and simple. They will sell, a HUGE margin on what will be a few sales. No problem if its a Rolls Royce option, but its probably a KIA option with a Rolls Royce badge.

If they don't load the dishwasher and put the kids to bed....no chance at that price.
