These look gorgeous. I think I'll be waiting for the reviews before I part with $1000 NZD for a pair of headphones though, eek.

Very pleased to see they use Lightning too rather than USB-C, so an easy fit with most of the Apple ecosystem.

Hopefully they don't have QC issues like my Sony XM4s which for me start crackling and hissing after an hour or two of listening (which Sony NZ have said is not a fault).

Be interesting to see how they compare with other headphones at this price point

Interesting, my work mate has the same problem with his MX4's and Sony have told him the same thing.. he upgraded from the MX3's.. which he sold so he quite gutted as he can't even flick the mx4's off now knowing they are faulty..

Makes the Bose and Sony ones look great value

The big question everyone appears to be asking is will they support Lossless Codecs....

They are gonna get seriously pilloried if they doesn't

Tell him to take them back. Why put up with it?

I can't speak for anyone else but I tried getting them fixed. Sony NZ's repair agent (Infinet) didn't seem to understand the issue even after I spoke with them on the phone more than once. I sent them plenty of links to other people having the same issue, as well as a YouTube video that someone made which demonstrates (audibly) the exact issue.

They were returned to me about 3 weeks later with a generic "no fault found" repair note.

I even spoke with Sony Australia (they phoned me requesting more information) but the end result is I have been given back the same faulty headphones and the issue is still happening.

I've gone back to the retailer this time rather than direct to Sony, so will see what eventuates there. At this stage I just want them replaced or refunded so I can purchase new headphones from a brand that doesn't have quality issues (or stick with my Bose QC35s which have been flawless for 4+ years).

But I don't want to derail this thread which should be about the AirPods Max.

Is bluetooth actually capable of lossless audio? I'm guessing it would require APT-X?

It's going to be really interesting to see what Hifi reviewers have to say when they get their hands on these. I have my doubts as to whether the real world performance will be any better than the Sennheiser PXC-550-II that I saw on special at JB Hifi recently for $350.

The Airpods Max are a really nice design and they have spatial audio and a few other fancy features, but the price premium still seems far too ambitious.

I should add that I am really keen to see whether the rumours are true that Sonos will soon be launching their own headphone product. They would integrate nicely with my other Sonos gear and I think it's a reasonably safe bet that they will be cheaper than this with similar performance.

Bung: Why are they even called Airpods when they are phones?

I have a feeling Apple are phasing out the Beats brand. They recently renamed their live radio stations in Apple Music to get rid of the Beats branding, including Beats 1 which is now Apple Music 1.

Which I guess might lead to "AirPods" being the new brand for their wearable audio range, with product names along the lines of AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, AirPods Sport, AirPods mini etc.

From Reddit
"The current theory is that it has to do with moisture buildup inside the ear cups causing a grounding/short somewhere in the ANC circuit which somehow causes microphone feedback."

The repair shop probably just left them on the bench so there wouldn't be the same humidity build up you'd get wearing them.

Shame that Airheads didn't pass the focus group :-)
