I still cannot work out why anyone with a TV bought in the past 5 years really needs an Apple TV unit at all. What is it actually for?

Plex on my new android TV is bad. Plex on Apple TV is great.
Airplay and screen mirroring works great from iPhones to Apple TV.
Netflix app on my TV is ok. Netflix app on Apple TV is great.
Somebody rings my doorbell, doorbell video shows on my TV.
Apple Music is great on tv with soundbar and shows lyrics on TV (kids use this every day)

Lots of good uses for our house.

Cheers,
Joseph

Also new Siri Remote is great and is the only remote I need to have out, controls Apple TV, TV and soundbar. It all just works together. And you can use your iPhone as a remote too, including for soundbar volume.

Yet on my Samsung, Airplay mirroring is great, Netflix is great, I don't have a doorbell (well, I do - he is called Hector and he is a German Shorthaired Pointer!) and I can use Airplay or Bluetooth to stream to my Samsung Sound bar. I do not know what Plex is. I probably use Siri once a month if that.

It still strikes me as a device that is increasingly redundant as TVs incorporate more and more of the things it does. It gets a lot of publicity which seems out of sync with it's usefulness to me but I guess I'm not the intended market!

My TV is ten years old and I'll keep it until it dies because they're an environmental nuisance when they are disposed of. The advantage of an Apple TV is I can easily swap it out without replacing the TV.

I find the sound quality coming out of the apple tv into the amp better than audio output from TV to amp.

I'll probably get the new atv because the current one predates my 4k TV so doesn't output 4k. The absence of ethernet in the cheaper option annoying though.

The intended audience prefer to use their TV as a display panel and use a dedicated box for the smarts. Many TVs older than 5yrs are no longer receiving updates so some of their built apps no longer work or can no longer play the latest formats.

As was also said earlier, the ATV is one of the simplest devices to set up a DNS service to stream overseas content. Pretty sure you’re Samsung can’t stream BBC, All4, SBS etc….

Reports from other forums say that after updating to tvOS 16.1, the Apple TV 4K (1st & 2nd Generations) is now showing the HDR10+ logo on former HDR10 only films from their iTunes libraries.

I immediately updated my software to the latest version, but I couldn't find any of the reported films showing the HDR10+ logo. My Panasonic does support HDR10+, so I'm not sure if we in NZ will get it, or maybe I need to fiddle with the settings.

I did a restart and a reset, still no luck. If any of you do see the HDR10+ logo on your HDR10 movies, please LMK.

EDIT: I updated my iPhone to 16.1, and opened the AppleTV+ app. Titles in my library still show as HDR10 only, but the store is showing up as HDR10+. I expect everything will be updated shortly.

Another reason not to upgrade to the new Apple TV 4K if we can get HDR10+ on our older models.

Take all the apps modern TV's have then add some more, make sure they work faultlessly and you have apple tv.

I have a 2019 TV yet never use the built in apps, I can run Sky Sports now, Disney+, Apple+, Netflix, Infuse Pro, Apple music and Apple Fitness all through the ATV. PQ and AQ are perfect.

Its a seriously underrated piece of kit

MM, Ive got the same TV as yours so can play HDR10+ I'll keep an eye out for format decoding and let you know

I bought my ATV4 in April 2016 after my HTPC died.

With it I can watch football from Norway and Sweden. Netflix, BBC and All4 from the UK, as well as US, Australian and NZ channels by simply creating an appleID in each country and installing whichever app I need.

No fuss, no hassle and works perfectly with my harmony rf hub.

I buy a tv for the quality of the screen, I'm not interested their smarts at all.

Watching BBC, ITV etc is that with a DNS? and, if so, which one is recommended 😀

This from What H-Fi UK:

"Apple is quietly adding support for the HDR10+ HDR format to its Apple TV app.

The iPhone maker confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that HDR10+ will be supported in the Apple TV app on iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

There's no official confirmation as to whether HDR10+ will be supported by tvOS 16 or other smart TV platforms that offer the Apple TV app (Google TV, Tizen, etc). Stay tuned for more on that."

Following on from my whinge on the Fire TV Stick thread, having a look at Apple TV devices. Lots of 4th Gen Apple TV devices for sale on TM for crazy prices... many for the same price as a new Apple TV HD!

According to skysportnow they only support 4th Generation version. Shows how bad they are at device support when they don't even mention the Apple TV HD model.

The 4th gen Apple TV includes the Apple TV HD model.
