Rumour has it that this year's iPhone is going to need a new charger, and knowing Apple you'll probably have to buy it separately.

Not likely. If the iPhone 15 range does move to USB-C, Apple will include a USB-C–to–USB-C cable in the box (rather than the current USB-C–to–Lightning cable they include), and it will work with any Apple USB-C power adapter that they've sold for the past 3+ years.

I think we have different definitions of "likely" :)

I suspect that a decent chunk of customers have been using iPhones for more than 3 years, and therefore have the old USB-A charger.

Seems strange that iphones don't get an adapter but all iPads are being sold with a USB-C Charge Cable and 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Yeah, it is strange.

If I had to guess, apple is concerned about poor user experience if somebody powers their ipad with a 5 watt source (many computer USB ports, and the charger that can with most iPhone models earlier than the iPhone 11). Either because the Ipad would take more than overnight to charge, or because the 5 watt charger can't keep with the power draw of ipads with the screen on (meaning on a screen always on application, the ipad would eventually go flat).

Putting a 20W adapter in the box is an easy way to avoid those issues.

Phones have smaller batteries & screen's, and are less likely to be used in all ways on applications, so for many users, using a 5W power brick will not be an issue.
