This is what I had:

(Picture of some moderately compact device)

In the 1970s POHQ was plagued with a farmer/inventer trying to get Type Approval for his answering machine. The prototypes were large suitcase size and would have been more reliable if steam powered. Having something network based that just worked was so much better. I quite enjoy the mobile visual voicemail for the ways that it gets the message almost right.

Will this be supported in NZ?

Visual voicemail was available some time ago on iPhones I recall but wasn’t supported here.

The Live Voicemail feature activates when you set your iPhone region and language to USA. Seems to work quite well.

I don't check my voicemail, since doing so is an interminably painful process.

Transcribe it and send me a text message or something, even if it's not 100% accurate I'll get the gist.

Shrug My voicemail message just says "I don't listen to voicemail. Send me a text." and hangs up.

I believe it came with the very first iPhone on launch day... in the US. That was sixteen years ago, yet as far as I know none of the local providers ever offered it.

We all have the capability. But it costs a lot of money to productionise ($Ms by the time you add up all the costs, not just the hardware & licenses), and customers are not willing to pay for it. Nor is it so compelling that anyone* would churn for it if it was provided for free.

Never say never, but after all this time I doubt there will be a sudden rush to push it out.

* I'm sure there might be someone who would, but not enough to pay it back.

The latest beta 5 of iOS 17 changes the Live Voicemail outgoing message to try to reduce confusion but apparently it's still confusing.

If people find "Your call has been forwarded to voicemail. The person you’re trying to reach is not available. At the tone, please record your message." confusing then they probably have bigger problems!

The story said callers might be confused by someone picking-up while the caller is in the middle of leaving a voice message - so, meh, and you're right.

Still sounds rather cool to me.

Spark have a voicemail app that transcribes voicemails with reasonable accuracy.

They've provided the functionality through One Business and their own app (Cisco rebranded).  Suspect that'll be why they've not bothered with the built-in feature.
