Wombat1: I believe it’s to stop scammers. Imagine if anybody in the world could just apply to get an aus number. I imagine it’s the same for NZ.

I'm not trying to contradict you about phishing, but the US, UK and Canada has it a whole lot worse than Australia, yet they don't have the same restrictions as Australia.

In NZ, we have a LOT of phishing SMS message from Australian numbers. In my personal experience in receiving frequent SMS scam messages, recently it's always an Australian phone number, though I'm sure they are probably spoofed.

It so bad that I've seen multiple scam warnings: in NZ if you get a SMS message from a business/government, and it's from Australia, treat it as red flag.

Comparitech: Phone Spam Statistics for 2017 – 2023

Phone spam is a major problem. So big, in fact, that Americans collectively fend off over 3 billion spam calls per month. We took a deep dive into the problem in our spam call case study – where you can see detailed information about how spam affects the average smartphone owner.

Our study underscores what many American, Canadian, and UK residents experience when it comes to spam. Given that the problem is global we decided to make this companion guide that looks at spam statistics around the world.

larknz:. Accepted my NZ passport, but wouldn't finalize until I was in Aussie. The number still valid back in NZ but I would need a roaming pack to actually use it.

Telstra will allow you to use wifi calling offshore.

It’s a catch 22 for New Zealand passports as the visa isn’t granted until you arrive. If you have a visa (other than the special category) or a local drivers license, you’ll probably be ok.

Woolworths mobile is another option, its cheaper than Telstra, and it runs on the telstra network.

Yes - it runs on Telstra wholesale. Doesn't get the 'full Telstra' network.
Aldi has probably the best casual one ($5/year).

There are reports that SMS over Wifi calling doesn't work on Telstra wholesale whilst its fine on Telstra Retail plans.

It doesn't matter who you go with, you still need to do ID verification. You can't do this from NZ. Do you know someone who's going to Aussie for a holiday?

Thanks @cokemaster. It's not a mobile number, but it's sound 100% reliable and pretty cheap which is what I want.

I might try Hero.co.nz, Flexi Lite: NZ + World - 5 hours (300 mins) $10/month

They use a standard VOIP box, the classic Grandstream's HT801 (one line, $82) & HT802 (two line)

Here's a list of cities where you can get numbers:
New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA

Look like everything you need for a small business, SOHO: fax passthrough, 3 way audio conference, auto-provisioning, black/whitelisting, call barring, blind transfer recall, line monitoring, missed call notifications and of course voicemail

Also has custom audio: hold music, custom caller rings, unavailable message, busy message, auto attendant, queue announcement

So worth giving the company a shot. (I have no relation to them)

I've used the HT801 in the past. It can give a little delay of about one second, but it is ancient and reliable technology. For typical home networks, doesn't need a fixed IP, nor firewall rules. The box reaches out to the provider via HTTPS.

I use a Hero VOIP line with an old LinkSys adapter connected to my LAN.  Seems to work perfectly.  At $5 per month for an Aussie line, sounds worth a try

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.
