A video I watched said the new chip is much more efficient, so Apple has been able to shrink the battery size while retaining a similar battery life as the previous model - it was definitely intimated that this is how they’ve managed to make it thinner.

So to sell you a thinner tablet (which I'm pretty sure no one asked for) they forgave the opportunity to increase the battery life (which I'm damn sure plenty of people have asked for)

Seems to sum up Apple pretty well 😃

I personally wouldn't buy an iPad Pro but I could see how it would be a useful tool for some specialist creative types.

The cheaper iPads seem like a good general purpose computer for schoolkids and people who are not tech savvy.

I got one of the new ipad pro when they moved to the new 11 inch buttonless screen designs which is also the current design. IMO the best thing about is the 120hz refresh rate which makes a huge difference. The ipad air or the lower 'ipad' which has the newer design still don't appear to have a 120hz screen.  So it appears they restrict the faster refresh rate solely for the pro range of products. Back when I got mine the price difference better the pro and the new air at the time wasn't very much, I think I paid $ 1100 in 2018 and it is still a great ipad to use.  Now the prices have gone crazy.

I wondering the new thinner design backs it easier to bend. Waiting for the Jerryrig video.

Apple hasn’t published the weight of the new Magic Keyboard, but an early review I read clocks the weight of the new iPad Pro 13” + Keyboard as now very fractionally less than the 13” MacBook Air. No one thought the iPad was too thick on its own, but the iPad/Keyboard combo was a little hefty in the large size so I think getting the combined weight down was the real goal.

For my use I seldom push it hard enough in a day for the battery life to be a concern, so I’d rather have it weigh less. But understand why others would have preferred more battery life. Can’t please everyone I guess.

just bought the 12.9" m2 ipad pro + magic keyboard + apple pencil a few months ago.... ahhhhhhhh wish I had waited. that new magic keyboard is the major pull, having a bigger touchpad with haptic feedback would be amazing. thinking of selling and upgrading.

That sucks. I’ll let you know my impressions when I get mine. I don’t have the old Magic Keyboard, but can borrow one to compare with the new one. I’m not getting the new Pencil Pro (and don’t have the old one) so can’t help you there.

Would be a costly upgrade if it’s just the a bigger/better trackpad you’re after, as you’d need to upgrade the iPad and the Pencil as well. Sounds hypocritical of me to say that when I’m only upgrading for the OLED screen!

The first reviews of the new M4 iPad Pro are starting to come in. Here’s a summary by 9 to 5 Mac. Consistent theme of brilliant and powerful hardware now being let down by constricting software.

Also Engadget’s review.

This is my problem with the iPad Pro. IMO they are a stupid device. It’s laptop class hardware that can’t run laptop apps for segmentation reasons.

It made sense in the Intel Mac days. It doesn’t anymore.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted the above. So depending on the review it's either a couple of grams heavier than 13" MacBook Air, or a couple of grams lighter. You can probably safely say it's the same weight, as a difference of a few grams would be imperceptible.

I'm a little surprised they aren't mentioning this somehow in their marketing, as it seems like a selling point that it's now as light with the keyboard as their lightest MacBook.

That's been the position ever since they put the M line chips into iPads (particularly the pro)  😃

Here's Engadget from 2021

"iPad Pro (2021) review: Apple’s hardware may have outpaced its software"
"..a machine this powerful demands even more progress from Apple’s software."

It really does depend on your use case. It's a stupid device for you, but there are graphic designers and artists etc who it do everything they need under iPadOS and do leverage the power of the M series chip. And then there are those (like me) who purchase it as something of a luxury item.

It would be great for the customer if the iPad Pro allowed you to run MacOS instead of iPadOS if you wanted (i.e. let you choose), but it would be financially bad for Apple as it would almost certainly kill the MacBook line. Even the various desktop Macs would take a hit if people could run MacOS on an iPad Pro and hook up a Studio Display. I just don't see this happening any time soon.

The strategy being run by Apple is pretty smart - probably produces max revenue. If for example they allowed MacOs on iPad > MacBook sales down and not compensated for by increased iPad sales.

Edit: Just saw this on 9to5Mac.

Impressed as always with how quickly Apple gets it product delivered. Was collected 3:30pm NZT yesterday from Sydney, and was just delivered at 1:30pm today in Christchurch.

Had it delivered to home and I'm at work so can't play with my new toy for another few hours though :(
