Anyone else getting one of these?

I've made the (probably) ludicrous decision to upgrade from my 5th Gen 12.9 inch M1 to the new 13 inch M4. I'm doing this for one reason alone... tandem OLED screen.

The mini LED backlight on the 5th/6th Gen makes it way better than any other previous iPad screen, but it's not OLED.

Am I out of my mind upgrading?

Stunningly Beautiful, but as with all of Apple's top end devices also stunningly expensive

$2.5K for the base + whatever Ram upgrades/cellular you want to add,

If you go all in,  its $4.8K for the 2TB cellular model.... - ouch

Actually would be $5.2K with the nano textured glass. $5.9K with the new keyboard. Throw in the new Pencil Pro and it maxes out at a poultry $6.15K.

I'm going base 256GB Wifi only model, and even that price tag is eyewatering. Current M1 has 256GB and storage hasn't been an issue. With 8GB RAM has never struggled on anything I've done (I'm not an artist or video editor), so didn't consider spending an additional $1200 for more RAM (and extra CPU core) in the 1TB model.

Wasn't originally planning to (as I didn't on previous one), but decided to go for the new Magic Keyboard this time as well. On the 5th/6th gen I felt the overall package was just a little to thick and heavy once the keyboard was added, so I'm hoping the reduced size and weight on the new one will make the difference. $699 for a keyboard seems the craziest part to be honest.

Most forums I've looked at people are saying not worth the upgrade. But OLED!

I'm curious to know the use case for such a premium tablet. Is this a laptop replacement for you or do you also have another (Apple or other) laptop?

I have a 2018 iPad Pro 11” which is widely acknowledged to be one of the best models Apple produced. It runs perfectly with no issues.

Only because I’m a sucker for ‘nice new things’, I’m wrestling with getting the new Pro 11”. However when I compare the specs of the two models line by line on Apple Store, there seems to be only two main differences - the screen and processor. The OLED screen sounds really cool but, really, my current screen is great too. The two screens have the same resolution and same ppi.

Maybe I’d be blown away by the speed of the new M4 but the current one (A12X) is not noticeably slow.

I guess there’s also the fact that the new one is a bit thinner and lighter. Ah and the camera is a bit better but that’s not of value to me.

Although I sometimes spend up to half my day on my iPad, I’m not a power user - all consumption, no creation. I can afford it but I’m having trouble justifying this to myself - let alone the WAF.

So I dunno - but maybe I’ll just say ‘yeah, why not’.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

For me the iPad is purely a luxury item. 90% media consumption, but also web browsing, email, etc. With the the Magic Keyboard I'm thinking I'll probably use it a bit for Remote Desktop to Windows.

I have a Surface Pro for work, but don't really use that for personal stuff.

Looking at the specs, the new iPad Air, @ both 11" and 13" are worthy of consideration as a cheaper step to newer tablets...

Although the fact that the 13" iPad Pro is now thinner and lighter than the 13" iPad Air tells me a lot about Apple's branding nomenclature :)

Thanks, appreciate the honesty and acknowledgment that its purely a luxury item mostly used for consumption. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you have the disposable income then power to you.

I don't treat myself very often, so I figure what the hell? Plus, if I aren't blown away by the new OLED screen I figure I can always return it.

Hopefully I'll get a fair price selling my current 5th Gen to subsidise the new one.

I personally wouldn't buy an iPad Pro but I could see how it would be a useful tool for some specialist creative types.

The cheaper iPads seem like a good general purpose computer for schoolkids and people who are not tech savvy.

The Pro is complete overkill for most people. I only got the M1 Pro for the better and bigger screen, I didn't need the highest specs in any other regard. Although the convenience of Face ID on the iPad over Touch ID is great. Touch ID on the little top button on the Air and Standard iPad works fine, but it's not the zero effort experience of Face ID that you don't even need to think about. It's a shame it's still only available on the Pro.

The base iPad compared to the Air now seems best value for you average consumer who will get zero benefit from the M2 chip. But being Apple they screw the consumer by starting at 64GB which isn't enough for anyone in my opinion, then jump straight to 256GB at an extra $300. Base storage should be 128GB, or at least have a 128GB option for say $100 more than the 64GB model.

Wow, these things are crazy thin!

I can't help but wonder if we're in for a revisit of the iPhone 6 "bendgate" era?

Surely there's a balance between thinness and durability that just can't be breached due to physical material limitations of strength.

Saw this ‘9 to 5 Mac’ story earlier this morning.

I doubt it. iPads don't go in your pocket and get sat on, and most people who are shelling out for the Pro are probably getting the Magic Keyboard as well which I assume would offer some additional strength when it's in a bag. But who knows?

I'm not overly concerned. I'm assuming the thinness was achieved primarily by having OLED instead of the LED backlit LCD. I doubt that was much of a factor in it's strength or durability.

I'm more (mildy) concerned as to whether the new aluminium magic keyboard has the potential to scratch the screen when closed. I know the screen has a hardness rating higher than aluminum so in theory shouldn't, but still....

A video I watched said the new chip is much more efficient, so Apple has been able to shrink the battery size while retaining a similar battery life as the previous model - it was definitely intimated that this is how they’ve managed to make it thinner.

Now that you mention it, I think I did see or read that somewhere as well. Not sure if that could be a detriment to strength.
