Um... not sure if this is related and pardon my ignorance on this but... my wife's Samsung S21 FE on OneNZ seems very unreliable sending "Messages". A lot of the time the message is never received at the other end

The other end is iPhone?

Behodar: Thinking about it logically, that makes sense. If the recipient's phone is offline then your phone doesn't know whether it can receive RCS or not. If it can't then the message would go into a black hole, and therefore it makes more sense to send as SMS

Ya. The problem comes when the recipient is out of cellphone coverage, and is offline. When this recipient goes back on line and they have no cell coverage there they will never get the message because it was sent as SMS. Nasty.

Unless they have Wifi, because SMS is tunneled over VoWifi. And if they don't have Wifi, they're not getting RCS either.

Not necessarily. Samsung to Samsung seems to be problematic too.

I will amend my scenario to include recipient does not have vowifi. SMS isn't tunneled over Wifi if you don't have vowifi/wifi calling, as (a).

Also could add a variation (b) where recipient actually has vowifi and the carrier does not support SMS over vowifi. (b) was the case for Spark and resolved a while ago I think leaving you with hole (a) for some non-enabled devices to fall into.

And all of this confusion is why having your data provider involved with a messaging app is a terrible idea.

Any other app, send message. Have data? Message goes thru.

SMS/MMS/RCS/vowifi - perhaps?

So, reading this, the RCS feature won't work in NZ unless the Telcos implement RCS capability on their core network?

I am not sure about iOS RCS, but Android RCS works in New Zealand, at least for me, with 2degrees and One NZ. It's been working for years.

Presumably unless locked out in carrier bundle settings by the carrier itself there is nothing preventing you from configuring your handset to use the Google RCS service once Apple enables it for NZ devices. Personally, I won't be, but that's just me.

@freitasm

Yes, I'm referring to iOS RCS. I use Android myself, and RCS functions smoothly since it leverages Google servers (similar to Apple's approach with iMessage). However, from what I've read about the implementation, Apple seems hesitant to adopt Google's servers. Instead, they appear to be pushing for carrier support, favouring a decentralised approach rather than the centralised servers used by Google currently

If using Samsung messages disable it and move over to Google messages

IOS 18 is officially launched but still not locking onto RCS according to About settings.

Thinking its an Apple thing rather than the telcos because it works on basically any Android.
