RunningMan:

That does sound like the nuclear option. Have you checked the focus setting and background refresh above?

Backup will be at settings->their name->iCloud->iCloud Backup

It is nuclear. I will check when I she gets home. On the other hand, could try to restore her backup to an older Iphone to see if the problem occurs there

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Looks pretty likely this is the issue that @bagheera posted the solution for but not sure if @lchiu7 has tried this.

Do you have a link to that solution?

try this - Go to settings > notifications > tap on “count” then tap back to “list”

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Did that already several times but will try again. Interesting thing as I posted earlier, it works if the app is open of course. Then when you swipe up and go back to the app icons, it still works. Then allow the phone to lock and it works once. But then after about a minute or so with the screen locked, the next incoming message will not alert.

The reset options exist for this purpose.  Try Reset All Settings before going down the factory reset path.

And in setting notifications for the app in question, does it have right to notify?

Yes and it does notify once when the app has been opened. The focus moved to the main screen and then the lock screen occurs. It just won't notify after that.

I read all of that. If it was my phone I would do all the above. But it's my wife and I am not an IOS person. So if anything breaks, I won't hear the end of it :-( that is why I am gun shy on doing changes like that.
