Update: got an email yesterday that the replacement phone shipped (on TNT) from Sydney yesterday, expect delivery within 10 business days.

Tracking today shows the phone in NZ already at local depot.

Update: TNT tracking says it was

"07/01/2025, 15:36

Auckland

Shipment left in agreed location as instructed"

Yet there's no sign of it and there was no agreed location (After all it is a $1400 device).

Worried phone call (had to borrow a phone) to TNT only to find that the above status means that it has been handed over to either NZPost or PostHaste for delivery. Nice of them to not say that on their tracking and give me a fright. If Apple don't get the faulty phone returned in the supplied packaging within 10 dollars they ping my credit card for the replacement costs!

Should put this in the Whisky Tango Foxtrot thread.

I wouldn't be worried. Apple has by far and away the best freight in tech I've ever come across.

You'll probably have it today or tomorrow

Yes - it arrived this afternoon so 3 days from request. Pretty good.

Doing the setup from old phone now. Has had a "signing in' display for while after entering the Apple account password. Hopefully it is actually doing the transfer and not still trying to sign in.

What a freakin' nightmare. First it is stuck on the sign in screen on the new phone.

Now it is waiting on an SMS 2FA which I won't get on the old phone because it's mobile network is faulty. If I ask for another method it is talking about several days delay.

I am about to blow a fufu valve and throw both phones off a wharf.

Just take the SIM out of your existing phone and put into another spare or family members while you do the transfer in order to get the SMS??

Ring Apple's phone support. They are usually pretty good with that sort of thing.

IIRC if you put the SIM in the new phone it will automatically enter the text code when it receives it as part of setup.

Yep. Called them with a sense of dread...

It was complicated - three phones in front of me - my old broken phone, my new phone and my son's phone with my old SIM installed. He had to call me back once that was setup. Then I shared my camera on the son's phone that we were talking on with him. It took some time but we bloody got there. He had to do some account unlocking in the background.

Some of the best phone support I have seen in some 40 years in the software development business. On the downside - Apple's technology and security, which is perhaps necessary, can lead to a labyrinthine nightmare in which those who enter may abandon all hope... Unless they are able to have three phones in front of them and get the right guy like I did.

Agreed. Apple was historically a brand focused on general consumers with modest tech skills, and I feel like they have started to overcomplicate things in recent years. It's good to know that their tech support is still really good because I'm sure I'll need it sooner or later.
