apple usually has international warranty...

I'm going to upgrade from my iPhone 2G because I want the faster processor and 3G speeds.

Not too happy about the price as I think it is quite a bit more expensive than other countries to buy outright ($599 USD / $879 AUD).

I am going to the states shortly but still plan to buy from NZ. The $200 is not enough for me to avoid potential activation / warranty issues.

My preference is for the XT network but it seems pretty unlikely telecom will be selling the phones from day 1. I would hold off buying if XT announced when they would sell them. I am still to work out whether I buy the phone outright or use a contract subsidy.

my 2 cents would be... ive had my iphone for just about a year now.. and did not require any service.. nor had i ever had issues... so dont think it will matter where you buy it from :P

Yes but you have to remember Apple has a 1 Year warranty which is excellent and you can just get it replaced. My iPhone 3G (bought on day of release) has just got a dead pixel, I called Apple and they took some notes, asked a few questions and within 5-10 minutes advised me to take it to Vodafone so they could send it to Apple and then Apple would send me a replacement. The iPhone is 11 days out of being 1 year old and it's *the* only issue I have ever had with it and it's a non issue as Apple are replacing it.

So if there is an issue with overheating Apple *will* do something about it, they always do.

Will I be buying one? No, because it's too expensive. I like Apple products and would love an iPhone, but everything has its price and I'm not one to hand over megabucks out of blind brand loyalty.

Anyway I have a good work phone (Nokia E51) and I'm inclined to think that an iPod classic might suit me better than an iPhone as I'd like to have my entire music library accessible from my Bose Wave system.

I probably won't by one. Too expensive for my tight budget, haha.

I'll just by a new 16GB 3rd Gen Ipod Touch in September/October at around half the price :P

I have had a Iphone 3G from launch day last year.

Its been upgraded to Version 3 firmware.

I will be going down to VF store on 10th July and getting a 3Gs

The Video capabilities is my main reason and the better camera. !! I know 1 more Mp isnt much. The video is extremely good quality from what ive seen on youtube plus 30 fps.'

Seriously. The only way to access a repair in NZ is by going to vodafone. Vodafone won't accept an iPhone without NZ proof of purchase.

I spent a month trying to get an Australian sourced iPhone serviced ex NZ before giving up and giving it to a relative to fly to the Sydney Apple store.

Once Apple worked out it was in fact an Australian iPhone they replaced it on the spot. (reception issues)

Those are tha main reasons that i have waited on getting one.
i want video, the better camera, and the speed otherwise i would be getting a 3G at the cheaper price.

One of the big reasons for me even getting a iPhone is so i can Control my iTunes on my media Pc at home and work. I was going to buy a laptop but for me this phone will do what i want, Remote desktop access etc.

I *really* wish people would stop going on about the price of it.......it's NOT that expensive especially in comparison to other handsets available and especially for what it can do, which is basically everything (with the exception of Flash)

Seriously guys come on......even if you are not a fan of Apple or their products, you can't seriously say this is expensive, and saying it's more expensive here than in other countries for buying it outright, well guess what, SO IS NEARLY EVERYTHING (including NZ's own milk!), that's the joys of living in a small country, with a low population.

I've got to agree with NZBullet. The device is arguably the leader in its class, a class which is populated mostly by $1000+ phones, yet somehow many are expecting it to be sub $1000. I must admit I was *hoping* it would $979 like the 8GB 3G, but somehow I always knew that was just wishful thinking.

Hang on a minute, i read somewhere that the device costs like US 176 for materials and US9 to make(roughly).

The markup is friggen huge, and frankly unacceptable. However, this needs to be put at Apples door, not so much the telcos.
However, ill still get one cos i love my 2G and want the increased speeds!

The force is strong with this one!
