Correct, *No* data is used. The maps are stored locally so doesn't need a connection to work.

Why? I thought the TomTom app used their own local maps, not over the network?

Hey I just downloaded Aussie version, bit bizarre that it costs less than NZ, effectively got a tom tom here for A$80 - not that I'm complaining

I'm waiting for someone to confirm that you can get the custom voices for the app like you can with the normal units. The only reason that will convince me to get TomTom's version instead of Sygic's is if I can get the Simpsons voice pack on it.

I haven't seen any options for purchasing additional voices anywhere in the current release. I imagine this first release is a 'get it out of the door' release..

I'd expect an update in the future to allow purchase of additional voices etc. - purely all my speculation of course, but it strikes me as a perfect candidate for the new in-app purchase system.

Surely TomToms standard 30day latest map offer would carry across to this?

Also, yes the maps cost money but the running updates for the maps are always free, standalone units use Tomtom Home to check and update but i suspect this will be like TT Navigator and use data connection directly to update

I purchased this app last week after reading about it here and in other reviews. I drove to Wellington (from Auckland) and back over the last four days and while I knew the way the app worked pretty well. Although the irish lady wanted me to go another route than the one I would have chosen, once I went my way the app quickly recalculated the new route.

In finding addresses in Wellington it was superb and 100% accurate. Although it works best when the car is moving. If you are stopped at lights the map jumps around as I suppose the unit does not know which way you are going.

It does need to be plugged in as its a real drain on the battery. Of course my power outlet and cord was not long enough to reach the place under the windscreen where GPS reception was best. Sitting in the console, GPS reception was dodgy.

I will get the Tom Tom cradle when it comes out and get it hard wired into the car.

I know iPhone has a problem running background apps and I've been told that the tomtom software doesn't work too well when you receive a calyl and you're using your iphone for directions, has anyone confirmed this?

Would suck to get lost because you got a phone call when you were using tomtom app.

I have a tomtom go 720 and have used it for just over a year, worked really well and never had issues with it. One thing I do like about the go 720 is the ability to make changes to the maps, selecting that roadworks are in the area etc. Basically when someone marks the location as 'road works' or 'dead end' or sets the roundabout to now be a traffic light, the changes are made to your tom tom and are uploaded to the internet when you sync. When other users sync, they can set their tom tom to only accept changes made by 1 person (any change) or 5 people or 10 people etc, so you can set how much you trust the changes, very cool feature.

What i'd like to see, is if many people start using the tom tom on iphone, is the ability for tomtom to record the speed of all the drives and then use this data to alert others in the area about traffic speeds.

I know there was one country that vodafone used handset location data and speed to generate traffic maps, I think they may have been forced to stop this due to pricicy issues or they may have carried on, but a very good concept.

I will wait for the cradle before I buy this device as my go 720 works real well plus the phone call issue may be a problem for me if the iphone cant handle the tomtom app and hands free calling at the same time.

I received a number of phone calls when I had the Tom Tom app running.

The phone call comes in over the top of the app and then the app comes back after the call is finished.

On one occasion the phone took a long time to get back on track, but that may have been more to do with dodgy GPS reception than anything else.

On the other occasions the Tom Tom came back up as expected. I think as long as the GPS signal is strong, the app sort of knows where it is and adjusts accordingly.
