Kitanai: Hi guys,

I'm just after some help to see if anyone else has managed to find a resolution in a similar case to mine.

I purchased my iPhone 3G one week after they came out, so I'm about 2 months out of warranty.

About three days ago, the battery life just went. I mean, from surviving around 2 to 3 days between charges, down to 2-3 hours. Not only that, but the phone has started heating up quite alot, and I'm fairly concerned about it exploding (Google search for iPhones exploding). The phone has not been dropped, or immersed in any liquid.

Any chance you just updated to 3.0 at the same time or near...?

There were HEAPS of similar reports when 3.0 first came out. Try turning off bluetooth/wifi/3g and rebooting and see if you have the same problem, i suspect not...

I did the 3.0 upgrade when it came out.

I have everything set to manual fetch, never even use the bluetooth.

I did the reset, will see if that sorts it.

Not sorted. It's been off the charger for 1 hour, and it's on about 40% battery.

He's currently working with my nearest store (Glenfield) to see if they can organise for a service.

I really hope that it's some silly little cheap-to-fix issue

So, basically I was going to go take it to the Glenfield store tomorrow morning BUT for some odd, strange and completely unknown reason the problem has gone away.

Turns out I wasn't running 3.01 (blame the broken laptop), but even after upgrade on Monday it was still broken and running out of battery and heating up.

Then, all of a sudden yesterday after work, took it off its charger, and it wasn't running out of battery! It's now been off the charger since 7am with 3G and Wifi enabled, no heating, and battery still says 100%. I've even made some calls. WoooOOoooOOOoooOOOT!

We'll see if this holds up....hopefully my problems are gone. Otherwise I will follow up again and use the CGA if need be.

Now to start saving up for a 3GS for next July when it's REALLY past its used by date!

Well it won't get replaced. I was going to have to get it serviced, and the reply would just be "uh, it's working just fine".

If there was an offer to get it replaced, I would already have taken it :-D

Not exactly "resolved". The problem disappeared itself with no warning (see posts above).

I was eventually advised by Vodafone that the actual process was that I take the phone to a store, with proof of purchase and it gets sent off to Mobile Phone Repair.

They then "estimate" the cost of the repair, and if I pay that estimate, and the phone will be replaced. They didn't specify if the replacement is a new 3G, a new 3GS, or a refurbished 3G.

On top of that, they quoted "The cost of the repair would be between $416 and $1000 (maximum) for out of warranty hardware". That's an unacceptable cost, you can't tell me it would cost that much to replace the battery. $1000 is more than it would cost to replace a 3G...............

If this issue does happen again, I will escalate directly to their management, and if I get the same answer, I will go straight to the Disputes Tribunal.

Hi Kitanai

Disputes Tribunal woud be where I take it next. As the others have stated if they lock you into a two year contract then the hardware should last at least last that time frame. I agree there would be a cost but $416 and $1000 hmmmm not good enough in my opinion.

Hope you get a resolution you are happy with!
