Ashka: It may share a similar OS to the iPhone, at least it isn't windows...


Just you wait. Apparently Windows 7 will run on it. More reading here.

They also say there is a possibility that more operating systems will work on the iPad – Mac OS X, Ubuntu – or maybe even Android.

Technically, that's not 'running Windows' on an iPad.

That's remote desktop, and there's nothing new to it. I don't get what the fuss is about.

The fact it has to be paired with a real computer running iTunes means it's not a real computer.

A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.
Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940?1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs).

The Church Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a netbook to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.

The iPad is therefore a Computer.

Sheesh.

If you want to get technical, anything with IC and and chips and bits and bobs are computers! Disregards whether it is large or small, they're computer, device that designed to do some computation for one thing or another!!!




Internet is my backyard...

I agree the iPad is a computer. If it requires a connection to another computer to get content is irrelevant in this context.

OK, it's a computer, like there's a computer inside my dishwasher. Point taken. But it's not a replacement for what is decreasingly called a personal computer. It's a mobile device. A mobile computer even, because even the iPhone is a mobile computer.

I suppose the best analogy is a new-born baby with the cord still attached. Both child and mother are 'persons' but the baby does not have the kind of independence that a full-grown person has ...

Good analogy. Yes, I agree it's a computer, I agree it's a mobile device and I agree it's not "grown up" enough to be a "personal computer" in the sense we know it now.

But things are changing, and these "personal computer" as we know now may be something of the past soon - mobile devices are even more "personal" than personal computers.

This device belongs in this forum because it is most similar to the iPhone ect, and thus problems and solutions (i.e. many threads) may be cross relevant, i.e. this is the most useful place.

It runs Mobile OSX and more specifically a version of the iPhone OS (3.2 at the moment) therefore it should be in this forum.
