corksta: Yeah that's always an option! The system accepted my Apple ID and I was one click away from reserving my iPad for pick-up at the San Francisco store! I've read about people from other countries also having no problem placing an order.

So, just need to know how many people are keen to see how viable it will be!

I don't want an iPad, but I might be interested if you're willing to buy me a laptop in the US. Tried to order from a few different websites in advance of my trip to the US last year, but couldn't find a place that'd accept NZ credit cards, so I'm hoping you have a way around that

If you're still planning to do this, please tell me when you're planning to go, what share of your costs you'd expect me to pay, and anything else you consider relevant.

Michael

Along with corksta, if his trip is too early for anyone, i'm heading to the USA from June 19th to July 10th if anyone wants me to get anything for them when i'm over there.

Michael, so that I don't hijack this thread any more than I have (apologies rebeltrousers!) feel free to DM me exactly what you're after. Using a NZ credit card over there in-store is fine, they usually just ask for photo ID at the same time.

I'd LOVE an ipad but I'm saving up for an iphone. I've got the second gen touch and love it. By the time I have the cash for a plan free iphone the new model should be out, if it comes out Junish as usual.

I have extreme envy for those of you getting an ipad, lucky devils.

Sell your Touch and put it towards an iPad instead! Wink

I need the smaller size as I carry it everywhere. Plus I'm passing the touch on to a family member. :)

He's got our "family" cell phone! He's perfectly happy to carry around two devices for those functions, I'm not. ;)

I'd like the iPad for surfing in bed, emailing and reading ebooks mostly. My ipod screen is just a little too small to do that comfortably though I do use it for all those from time to time. I also use a lot of useful little aps really frequently (daily) like dictionary, calandar, notepad, thesaurus, etymology that I can see being just as useful on the pad as it could sit on my desk for those / in my satchel for travel back and forth.

I might even watch stuff on it if I could stick a usb into it but I couldn't be bothered if I had to sync like the ipod for movies, I'd just keep using my PC for that.

The iPod I currently use mostly for all those small aps plus I listen to ebooks daily as I walk to/from work, mow the lawn, exercise and so on. iPad is too big to carry around on a walk or when you mow the lawn.

Idealy, I'd love to have the iphone AND the iPad plus my laptop which is hooked into a bigger screen, speakers and regular keyboard when it's home (best of portability plus function, lol) but money being in limited supply, it's going to be the 'phone. Maybe I can get an iPad next year.

Feel free to post pics/ relate experiences of yours though, I can at least admire from afar!

I'd be keen for a 16gb wifi model but how are you going to get on bringing them back through customs?

You'd just pay the tax and customs fees like any other item that you'd bring in to the country.

It's hit and miss.

In 2008 on a trip to San Francisco I bought about US$1000 worth of gadgets, declared that I was bringing in more than the personal concession of NZ$700, but was never asked about it by Customs.

Having said that I could buy several iPads then get stung paying GST, so yeah, hit and miss.

Did they check to see what you did buy?

But yeah, $1000 is one thing, >4-5 iPads would possibly be a different story.
