AUCKLAND, New Zealand - 27 July 2010 - Apple's iPhone 4 will be available in 17 more countries this Friday, 30 July. iPhone 4 features FaceTime, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, Apple?s new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video, and a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Beginning this Friday, customers can purchase iPhone 4 in New Zealand, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. iPhone 4 will be available for purchase through Apple?s online store (www.apple.com/nz/store) and Apple Authorised Resellers (www.apple.com/nz/buy).

Pricing & Availability
iPhone 4 will be available for outright purchase for a recommended retail price starting from NZD$1,099 inc GST through Apple?s online store (www.apple.com/nz/store), and select Apple Authorised Resellers (www.apple.com/nz/buy). A new iPhone 3GS 8GB model will be available for outright purchase for just NZD$899 inc GST. iPhone 4 will roll out to many more countries later this year and Apple will announce availability and local pricing for these additional countries at a later date.

steve98: I can confirm it's not a fake. It was emailed to my site by Fiona Martin, Apple PR person for NZ. And yes the iPhone 3GS 16GB was $1149 via Apple or $1179 from Vodafone so the iPhone 4 is cheaper by $50 / $80.

Hey! Vodafone was $30 more? thats almost the price of a sim....

Vodafone was actually $50 more, and unless you wanted the subsidy I don't understand why would anyone buy from them.

At launch it was a $30 difference. Here is the original pricing taken from this article:

Yeah, only it didn't even include one. To buy one from a store you had to prove you were an existing Voda customer, therefore already owning a SIM.

Exactly. If telco's had to advertise the total cost of ownership over the contract period here in NZ as they do in Aussie I think we'd see drastically different purchasing trends.

I seem to recall a telco in Canada (rogers) loosing exclusivity (because of it's inflated pricing?) about a year ago, resulting in the iphone being sold unlocked... I wonder if the same hasn't happened to VFNZ?

I see a lot of people (around other sites) are happy with the price and I’m not sure if I agree.
I don’t see why our iPhone 4 prices aren’t as closely matched to the iPad prices as they are elsewhere.
32GB WiFi = 16GB iPhone 4 & 32GB WiFi+3G = 32GB iPhone 4 

That’s the case for the UK & Canada (just a $10 premium on the 16GB iPhone 4 over the 32GB WiFi iPad).
There’s no way the economies of scale and smaller shipping volume per unit shouldn't have our iPhone 4 prices closer to the iPad instead of the $120 premium we look to be paying.
As people have said, it is better than our round with the 3GS, when we had to eat the “NZ’s far away / GST” reasoning. This time though we can actually compare Apples with Apples in the iPad/iPhone.

Is this making sense? Or have I messed up somewhere?

If the NZD is at least 10% stronger against the USD when 3GS came out, this price is not all that reasonable.

I dont want to open the usual can of worms up again, but a friend has just emailed me to say he's upgraded his recently stolen 3GS to an iphone4 for 30 quid in England.

Thats about what you would pay for a slap up curry :(

Suddenly $1200 sounds like an awful lot of money for a phone.

Actually, it looks like it is a worldwide store thing. I guess the MacPro / iMac refresh that the tech blogs mentioned might be in the works so it probably isn't due to the iPhone 4 launch here. Oh well, you never know :)
