Good to see VF Oz building some hype and joining in on the whole thing. We're unlikely to get anything but a - sign here if you want an update - from VFNZ.

I'd be keen on a new design iPhone 5 but that's not a definite.

I'm not getting an iPhone 5, but I am keen to get the next gen iPod Touch for my teenage daughter for Christmas. Does anyone know if the new iPod refreshes are due to be launched at a similar time?

Traditionally iPods have been launched in September, so they're due for an update.

Dunnersfella: It'll be limited numbers as per usual... hopefully I can pick my new phone up via the Apple store as I'm after an unlocked version out of the box.

We all know Apple will drag chain with limited stock in the supply chain for 3+ months like they do with every product!

I generally update my phone every 3 years, so will likely take a look at it early next year. I don't buy new things on hype, for me, devices have to actually work well and add significant value over what I use today.

I'm definitely planning to buy one to replace my ageing 3GS but not until I can buy one contract-free from Apple online or JB Hifi.

I'm also going to stick my neck out here and suggest the possibility that the next iPhone may be widely available contract-free as the iPad is. Apple have been slowly loosening up their relationships with preferred carriers so this would be the next logical step.

Anybody want to speculate on the impact this 5 will have on the pricing for the 4 and 3gs?

The current pricing is as follows on the Apple site:

iPhone 4 $1123 16GB $1328 32GB

iPhone 3gs $919 8GB

Personally, I think the price difference between the 3gs and 4 is kind of a joke. Particularly when you consider the storage on the 4 is double.

Good on Apple for selling their the full range here. I get so sick of reading reviews of awesome stuff I can't buy or at least can't buy easily.

I'd hardly call selling everything as fast as you can make it "dragging the chain"... unless you're just taking the mickey.

They *always* seem to drag the chain in terms of available stock.  It blows me away that people will drop ~$1200 on a phone.  Not just iPhone, but the Apple buyers seem to be the least concerned about price.

The company I work for had plenty of orders for iPad 2's that we couldn't fill.  It was pretty bad for the Apple team.

It's not just a phone. ;) The thing gets used by me in all kinds of ways, mostly at work but at home too. Yeah, I'll probably get the 5 so the man can have the 4 and he can text me decently finally! Also, I've got the ipad 1, waiting for 3 to update that. Most useful device aside from my phone and laptop!

I'll buy the phone online.

I would guess that the 3GS would disappear off the normal webstore and pop up in the refurbished section (even though they would be new condition, im pretty sure apple labels their old models refurbished the day a new model comes out to segment the market), with the usual refurbished discount of 20-30%.

I'd like the 3GS to stay, not as a leftover or selldown. Apple operate in the market at only one level. Wtih high margins and demand, its worked for them. It still would if they just went on as usual, profit wise. There are more players, popular Androids, up and comig WP7's,  they may step into midrange with a suitably priced iPhone 4S as is rumoured at the 8/16Gb level. The 3GS is a great entry level. Yes its really old, but the design/form factors are basically similar to the 4 and 5. 3GS supports iOS5 although not all features. Make the 3GS $399, 4S $799. The 5 will be todays 4 prices I expect. Hard to say as their high margin and far more cost efficient manufacture allows them to not need to chase market share. But they can at least get a bite at the market they have ignored to date.

$919 for an 8Gb 3GS? Do they sell any at that???    Or is that just marketing?
