Just loaded iOS 5.0 on 3GS. Very snappy, very recommended.

Having used it for about a week now, I've found a few annoying things:

1. Switching to or launching an app often takes a long time, up to about 10 seconds. Sometimes when it takes this long, the app will then crash and you will need to try again. It happens with Apple apps like Phone, Mail and Messages as well as 3rd party apps

2. App crashing is more common than with 4.3

3. In one case my alarm (I use 'Awaken') failed to go off even though the app was running in the foreground

4. Sync not that stable - iTunes will sit there and say 'Waiting for sync to start' for a while before timing out. I think this is as much an iTunes issue as an iOS issue

This doesn't seem to happen on my iPad, even though it also only has 256MB of RAM, which I would otherwise assume is probably the biggest reason why the performance is a problem. The ~600MHz processor isn't top of the speed charts but even these days it's hardly the slowest one you can find out there.
