Does anyone know how painful it's going to be?
Is it going to slow the phone down like iOS4 did to the 3G?

I just loaded iOS5 GM on my iPhone 4 and it's now a lot faster.. I've also seen some people on the net saying that iOS5 has given their 3GS "new hardware". Obviously if a 3GS was running the beta version it could be a lot slower/buggy.

There are some benchmark performance tests published on Engadget today and if I'm reading the graphs correctly it actually suggests a significant performance boost for the 3GS.

Have you got a link for those?
I just had a quick scan across Engadget and couldn't see anything obvious, although it was a quick scan haha.

Slightly off topic, early 4S benchmarks. "Early recipients of the iPhone 4S have filled the void by posting benchmarks on the Web."

Cheers.
That does look like it gets a nice little bump in performance indeed.

After about 15 tries I finally got iOS5 loaded onto my 3GS - noticed no real change in performance.

Mine loaded first time no problems at all.

Seems about the same performance wise. Not really too fussed though, it's only a work phone, still got my Galaxy S2 for everything else Smile

Had problems with updating so did a DFU restore and set up as a new device. Works like a dream machine now.

Running ok here, noticing a lot of "low memory" hits in the diagnostics tho, but could just be some of the apps I run.

I havent had any issues at all with iOS5, been running it since GM was out (which is the same release as official) and I have noticed that the 3GS is faster.
Angry birds is a bit laggy every now and then, but to be honest I don't use my phone for games, and I can't tell you whether it was like that with iOS4, as I never played it then either.

BAttery life is the same if not better, I run 2 exchange accounts, with all my notifications etc coming in and whatever else going on, and still am achieving the same and some days much better battery results.

So yeah, definitely a plus this end - the only thing I really don't like is the fact they've split iPod into Videos and Music.

I am planning to do my iOS 5 upgrade this weekend on my 3GS.

I've been jailbroken since jailbreakme 1.0 went live on iOS 4.0 over a year ago.

Since then I've become a fan of:

Sbsschedule
Adjust volume and system settings automatically (ringer off at night etc)

Haptic pro
Well implemented haptic feedback

Showcase
Keyboard shows correct case

iCallannounce
Tells you who's calling and can read texts

Call infofield show actual incoming phonenumber as well as name

F.lux
Changes colour temp of screen at night, very nice for eyes.

Firewall
Stop ads and needless analytics data

Ask to call
Stops the phone ringing people accidentally

And some other nice phone tweaks like phonecloser and missedcallopening

I hope the advantages of a tidy new iOS 5 install are enough for my curiosity.
