One thing I forgot about the horrible iOS notifications was screen wake every time, is there a way to turn that off and just get the the notification sound without draining the shit out of my battery?

I can't even imagine getting so many notifications that I would be concerned about battery life, maybe consider disabling notifications for some apps haha?

Other than that though, yes you can, it is app specific though:

Siri keeps coming up when I press the side button even though I only want to wake the device. It seems that holding the button for a millisecond too long causes it to active Siri rather than just waking.

This is really becoming a major nuisance now. When the device is asleep, a short press of the side button seems to either wake it or activate Siri and it's totally random as to which of those two things occurs.

So far I have explored the following options:

  • Turn off Siri entirely. This isn't workable as it disables Carplay.
  • Turn off the side button 'voice assistance' activation within the accessibility options. This also appears to disable Siri, so same problem as above.
  • Turn on 'raise to wake' so that I don't need to use the side button to wake the device. I don't like this as it constantly wakes the device when I'm not intending to use it, which creates a risk of unintended touch screen inputs.
  • Use the accessibility setting 'tap to wake' as an alternative to the above. I don't particularly like this either but it's the best solution I can find.

Have you considered maybe you have a faulty device? I've checked and I have to really intentionally hold down the power button to enable Siri, it's not something I would do by accident.

Also, why is raise to wake such an issue? "Constantly wakes the device" sounds fishy to me. Generally if I pick up my phone I want it to wake up, and i've never had it created "unintended touch inputs", FaceID means I need to be actually looking at the device to unlock it and have any inputs occur anyway.

I have tap to wake enabled also, use it all the time when I just want to see something when phone is on a table but not actually pick it up. Tbh I thought this was on by default anyway.

Try this

Settings> Siri & Search > press side button for Siri - OFF.

I have listen for hey siri on and allow Siri when locked. That should disable the side button plus keep Siri on

Thanks, I didn't realise that this was possible. To be honest I have always had the 'hey Siri' thing turned off because in past experience I have found that it activates randomly when in a room where people are talking.

Yes well you can still have the side button off and "listen for hey siri" off as well. Not sure how you would activate siri though?

Thanks, your experience supports my feeling that something is wrong. The possibility of a hardware fault had crossed my mind but it seems unlikely given that the side button is behaving normally in every other respect.

Face ID is very efficient, so much so that it often unlocks my phone if I just pick it up without intending to use it. I was concerned that I might pick my phone up, put it in my pocket, and have unintended contact with the screen which could do something disastrous like deleting an email or tick off something on my to-do list.

This concern isn't based on any real world experience so maybe I should just take a risk and give it a try.

I don't want to use Siri at all. My needs are very basic so I like having the phone in 'dummies mode', except for the fact that I use Carplay. I really don't understand why you can't use Carplay with Siri disabled.

Not convinced this is a solid solution. Wish Apple would actually bring their notifications into the 21st century.

The 21st century solution would be to get an Apple Watch, that way only your watch vibrates and your phone display doesnt even turn on unless you arent wearing your watch.

You need to change settings then

Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Require attention for Face ID - ON

Unless you are looking at the screen it wont unlock. Ive tested it many times even if you hold it in front of your face but are looking sideways it won't unlock. Look at the phone screen and bang it unlocks.

By default I always have raise to wake and tap to wake enabled for convenience. he only time I turn them off is when I go for a run and have my phone in my belt bag or running vest. I've had a number of occasions when my phone has been woken up on a run and subsequently locked when I get my passcode incorrect when my phone is bouncing around in my pack. Get the passcode incorrect 3 times and you could be locked out of your phone for 6 hrs!

Man apple really do know how to complicate the most basic of things don't they. Why create a shortcut app for changing an icon? Why then have an annoying as heck banner notification every time you open it? It's like being back in 2006.

Just ordered my first iPhone since the 5S!

Been away for a while, looking forward to see what I'm going to miss from Android. Notifications no doubt!

Well we bit the bullet and ordered direct from Apple two iPhone 13's [128Gb] Black & two 20Ah chargers on Sunday 28/11/2021 and was emailed they would arrive Monday 06/12/21.

They arrived this morning Wednesday 01/12/2021. All of 4 days from Sydney.

No one in Tauranga had that model in stock and all were saying deliveries not until January 2022.

What we have found is there is still not a huge choice in 3rd party accessories available yet. Cases & screen protectors especially. I bought the Clover green silicon case direct from Apple, in the above order, and my partner bought a 3sixT NeoWallet Case from Noel Lemming but there were very lean pickings. Make sure you flash your Gold Card as we got $23.00 off for this case.

Transferring everything over from our previous venerable Oct 2016 iPhone 7's was a breeze. Had to reload the Vaccine Pass again though, same as for CC.

A very nice speedy device in all aspects.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
